Asbestos is released to water from a number of sources, including erosion of natural deposits and waste piles, corrosion from asbestos-cement pipes, and disintegration of asbestos roofing materials with subsequent transport via rainwater into cisterns, sewers, etc. (Millette et al. 1980). Waste water from asbestos-related industries may also carry significant burdens of asbestos fibers (EPA 1976). The total amount of asbestos released to water has been estimated to be 110,000-220,000 pounds (50-100 metric tons) per year (NRC 1984). 

Hazardous Materials Transport According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, there are approximately 300 million hazardous material shipments of more than 3.1 billion metric tons annually in the U.S. bulk transport over land including shipping by tanker truck and rail car and by special containers on vehicles. The total annual direct cost of corrosion for this sector is more than 0.9 billion that includes cost of transporting vehicles ( 0.4 billion) and of specialized packaging ( 0.5 billion) as well as costs associated with accidental releases and corrosion-related transportation incidents.

The objective of this section is to elucidate some of the current literature findings of environmental and health/safety issues with airborne nanoparticles. The Uterature review of the most recent articles in this area includes topics related to the multiple components of the risk assessment framework. This includes such important aspects as particle characteristics effecting toxicity, their fate and transport throughout the environment, the routes of exposure and the metrics by which exposure ought to be measured and the mechanisms of translocation to different parts of the body. In addition, recent studies are presented that involve the characterization of nanoparticles in the workplace during different operations and conditions.
