In order to screen effectively over a wide range of pathologies the screening assay needs to be a catch all measure of a ubiquitous process in cell injury. As there is no single measure yet described that will catch all toxicities sufficiently early, multiple parameters must be assessed. Live cell assays are the most sensitive indicators for detection of adverse effects.

While there is no standard assay design for teratogenicity or developmental toxicity screening, there are many similarities in the types of assays that have been described in the literature (4-9, 22-25). One version of these (4) is described here, and an overview of the assay design is shown in Fig. 3. Variations on this assay (alone or in combination with other techniques) can also be used for more descriptive characterization of the effects of a test substance or evaluation of the mechanisms of developmental toxicity. 

Frog embryo teratogenesis assay on Xenopus (FETAX) has been routinely used in oiu laboratory for the last 12 years as a routine developmental toxicity screening test for pharmaceutical candidate compoimds. To date, out of more than 400 candidates tested in FETAX, around 60 have also been evaluated in mammalian embryotoxicity studies according to standard ICH protocols. 

However, despite the rapid improvements in analytical chemistry, at the same time we start to realize that these methods may no longer be sufficient to deal with the often very complex mixtures of chemicals or ever changing chemical structures of toxicants present as residues in our food chain. Furthermore, there is a strong need for rapid screening assays that can be used for extensive monitoring programmes.
