The use of nitrogen fertilization results in higher content of N-containing compounds, including free amino acids, and also increases in terpene content in wood plants, whilst starch, total carbohydrates, phenylpropanoids and total carbon-based phytochemicals decreased (Koricheva et al., 1998). Higher levels of nitrogen favoured its uptake and increased the nitrate content of the crop, which is critical for salad vegetables and baby foods. 

Until the advent of modern instrumental methods of analysis, the best we could hope to do was to measure the amounts of certain broad classes of compounds present, as, for example, the total protein or total carbohydrate. 

Pellenberg [114] analysed soils and river sediment for silicone content by nitrous oxide-acetylene flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry. He showed that total carbon and total carbohydrates both correlate well with silicone content and the correlation between sedimentary silicone and presumed sewage material is good enough to suggest silicone as a totally synthetic, specific tracer for sewage in the aquatic environment.

The particular wood species we chose for this study is aspen (Populus tremuloides), which is plentiful in Canada and in the northern U.S.A. The chemical composition we found to be glucan 53.4%, xylan 14.9%, total carbohydrate 79.0%, lignin 17.1% and extractives 3.8%. We would expect total fermentable sugars of about 56% in this sample of aspen in anhydro form (Timell has reported about 60% in another sample (15)) which upon hydrolysis would yield about 1,250 lb wood sugars per ton of wood (dry basis), from the stoichiometry. Theoretical conversion of this sugar to ethanol would yield 640 lb or 81.1 gallons of anhydrous...

The approximation will show if major adjustments are necessary prior to bench work the value at this stage should be about 80% of the target level. A reduction in osmolality can be achieved by substituting low MW sugars with a maltodextrin or by reducing the total carbohydrate content. Similarly, an increase can be achieved by the opposite moves.
