During the optical coat work stress examination method the upper plate of the head of some of the bolts was covered with an optical coat work (Fig. 4). On the head of some other bolts strain gauges were stuck which measured the plain biaxial stress state in the middle of the top surface of the head of the bolt (3.5 x 3 mm). The magnetic probe detected average stresses up to 0.1 mm depth in an area of 14 mm diameter in the middle of the head of the bolt. [Pg.7]

Second, when filling a pipet or volumetric flask, set the liquid s level exactly at the calibration mark. The liquid s top surface is curved into a meniscus, the bottom of which should be exactly even with the glassware s calibration mark (Figure 2.6). The meniscus should be adjusted with the calibration mark at eye level to avoid parallax errors. If your eye level is above the calibration mark the pipet or volumetric flask will be overfilled. The pipet or volumetric flask will be underfilled if your eye level is below the calibration mark. [Pg.29]

Next we consider replacing the sandwiched fluid with the same liquid in which solid spheres are suspended at a volume fraction unit volume of liquid-a suspension of spheres in this case-the total volume of the spheres is also 0. We begin by considering the velocity gradient if the velocity of the top surface is to have the same value as in the case of the... [Pg.587]

Figure 20 shows an arrangement which is unaffected by air pressure fluctuations, because any force appHed to the material is canceled by an equal and opposite force appHed to the iaside top surface of the hopper. It may be desirable or necessary to vent the hopper for efficient material handling. [Pg.338]

Lay-up proceeds by laying down the veneer which is to be the back surface of the panel. Then a sufficient number of pieces of core veneer are passed through the glue spreader to form the next layer of cross-oriented veneer. The glue spreader commonly used in hardwood plywood manufacture is a roU coater in which a pair of opposing mbber roUs are coated with a thin layer of adhesive. As the veneer is passed between the roUs, the adhesive is transferred to the surfaces of the veneer. Adhesive is appHed only to the cross-pfles and in sufficient quantity to provide a continuous layer on both opposing faces of veneer. Thus, in the case of a three-ply panel, only the core layer is spread with adhesive and in that of a five-ply panel, the second and fourth layers both of which are cross-pfles, are spread with adhesive. Then the top surface veneer, which is normally the decorative surface, is placed on the assembly. [Pg.382]

In the automated lay-up system, each layer of veneer (with exception of the top surface veneer) passes under an automatic adhesive appHcation system. This may be a spray appHcation, a curtain coater, or an extmder, each of which is designed to apply a uniform adhesive spread on the upper face of each veneer. After all except the top veneer have been spread with adhesive and laid together, the top veneer is added. The me of the veneer—adhesive assembly at this point should be about 8%. [Pg.384]

Drawdown from the die to nip is typically ca 10%. Sheet extmsion requires that the resin be of high melt viscosity to prevent excessive sag of the melt between the die and the nip. The melt should reach the nip before touching any other part of the middle roU to prevent uncontrolled cooling of the resin. The appearance of the lower surface of the sheet is deterrnined by the middle roU, ie, its poHsh, surface temperature, and freedom from condensed materials. The upper surface is cooled by air and has a more glossy appearance. Neither the top roU nor the bottom roU greatly affect the appearance of the top surface of the sheet. Edges of the sheet are trimmed. [Pg.140]

Weather-resistant mineral granules appHed to the top surface of strip shingles during the manufacturing process make possible a wide range of colors. Sand, talc, or mica is appHed to the back surface. [Pg.214]

Bed limiters commonly are used with metal or plastic tower packings. The primary function of these devices is to prevent expansion of the packed bed, as well as to maintain the bed top surface level. In large diameter columns, the packed bed will not fluidize over the entire surface. Vapor surges fluidize random spots on the top of the bed so that after return to normal operation the bed top surface is quite irregular. Thus the liquid distribution can be effected by such an occurrence. [Pg.79]

Much effort has been expended to try and produce flat-top foams. In one process polyethylene sheets placed along the side-walls of the trough rise with the foam. In another technique the reactants are metered from the mixing head into a fixed trough in which partial expansion takes place. The foaming material is then drawn over a weir by a moving band of paper and then drawn down a slope so that the top surface maintains a constant level as the material expands. [Pg.793]

In this more general analysis it is essential to be able to define the position and thickness of each ply within a laminate. The convention is that the geometrical mid-plane is taken as the datum. The top and bottom of each ply are then defined relative to this. Those above the mid-plane will have negative co-ordinates and those below will be positive. The bottom surface of the /th ply has address hf and the top surface of this ply has address hj-. Hence the thickness of the /th ply is given by... [Pg.208]
