Toothpaste products antimicrobial agents

Oral Cleansing Products. Toothpastes and mouthwashes are considered cosmetic oral cleansers as long as claims about them are restricted to cleaning or deodorization. Because deodorization may depend on reduction of microbiota in the mouth, several antimicrobial agents, either quaternaries, such as benzethonium chloride [121 -54-0] or phenoHcs, such as triclosan [3380-35-5] are permitted. Products that include anticaries or antigingivitis agents or claim to provide such treatment are considered dmgs. [Pg.299]

One of the most widely used antimicrobial products today is 2,4,4 -trichloro-2 -hydroxydiphenyl ether, known more commonly as triclosan (Fig. 15. Id). Triclosan finds extensive use in mouthwashes, toothpastes, liquid hand soaps, deodorant products, and the like. Although it is effective against most bacteria, it has poor antifungal properties. Triclosan is also important as a textile finish, but since its water solubility is very low, aqueous application requires use of dispersing agents and binders. [Pg.168]

Products and Uses Naturally occuring in cinnamon, cloves (ripe), cranberries, plums, and prunes. Used in food preservatives, tobacco seasoning, flavors, perfumes, and toothpastes. Utilized orally as an antiseptic, diuretic, and expectorant and as an antimicrobial (antiseptic) agent, flavoring agent, and food preservative. [Pg.57]

Products and Uses It is an antimicrobial (kills germs) agent preservative for food and pharmaceuticals. Useful as an additive in tobacco, creams, carbonated drinks, pickles, toothpaste, fruit juice, preserves, margarine. [Pg.251]
