BHC is manufactured by chlorination of benzene in the presence of ultra-violet light. The gamma-isomer is obtained from the crude mixture by selective crystallization, and forms colourless crystals, m.p. I13" C. U.S. production 1980 400 tonnes. [Pg.59]

Normal butyl alcohol, propyl carbinol, n-butanol, 1-buianol, CH3CH2CH2CH2OH. B.p. 117 C. Manufactured by reduction of crotonaldehyde (2-buienal) with H2 and a metallic catalyst. C4H8O, CH3COCH2CH3. Colourless liquid with a pleasant odour, b.p. 80°C. It occurs with propanone in the products of the destructive distillation of wood. Manufactured by the liquid or vapour phase dehydrogenation of 2-butanol over a catalyst. Used as a solvent, particularly for vinyl and acrylic resins, and for nitrocellulose and cellulose acetate, also for the dewaxing of lubricating oils. U.S. production 1978 300 000 tonnes. [Pg.71]

Beckmann rearrangement of cvc7ohexanone oxime. M.p. 68-70 C, b.p. I39 C/12 mm. On healing it gives polyamides. Used in the manufacture of Nylon[6]. CoAsS, are also used as sources. The ore is roasted and Co is precipitated as the hydroxide and then reduced to Co with carbon (hep below 417 - C, cep to m.p.). The metal is silvery white and readily polished. It dissolves in dilute acids and is slowly oxidized in air. Adsorbs hydrogen strongly. The main use of cobalt is in alloys. Cobalt compounds are used in paints and varnishes, catalysts. Cobalt is an essential element in the diet. World production 1976 32 000 tonnes metal. [Pg.104]

CH2CI2. A colourless liquid with a chloroform-like odour b.p. 4I°C. Prepared by heating chloroform with zinc, alcohol and hydrochloric acid manufactured by the direct chlorination of methane. Decomposed by water at 200°C to give methanoic and hydrochloric acids. Largely used as a solvent for polar and non-polar substances, particularly for paint removal (30%), dissolving cellulose acetate and degreasing (10%). It is more stable than carbon tetrachloride or chloroform especially towards moisture or alkali. It is somewhat toxic. U.S. production 1981 280000 tonnes. [Pg.135]

HOCHj CHjOH. Colourless, odourless, rather viscous hygroscopic liquid having a sweet taste, b.p. 197 C. Manufactured from ethylene chlorohydrin and NaHC03 solution, or by the hydration of ethylene oxide with dilute sulphuric acid or water under pressure at 195°C. Used in anti-freezes and coolants for engines (50 %) and in manufacture of polyester fibres (e.g. Terylene) and in the manufacture of various esters used as plasticizers. U.S. production 1979 1 900 000 tonnes. [Pg.139]

SH or — NH group to give acetyl (ethanoyl) derivatives which are useful for characterization. Largely used for the production of cellulose ethanoate, also used for the manufacture of vinyl ethanoate and aspirin. U.S. production 1978 680 000 tonnes. [Pg.164]
