A different approach, although stdl working with essentially non-fiinctional polymers has been exemplified [114,115], in which, a 100% solid (solvent free) hot melt has been irradiated to produce pressure-sensitive adhesives with substantially improved adhesive properties. Acrylic polymers, vinyl acetate copolymers with small amounts of A,A -dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate, diacetone acrylamide, A-vinyl pyrrohdone (NVP) or A A have been used in this study. Polyfunctional acrylates, such as trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate (TMPTMA) and thermal stabilizers can also be used.

It was found, when an attempt was made to conduct ship trials that the paint applier would be required to wear long sleeves, gloves, safety glasses, and a protective face shield. It is also a requirement that an eyewash fountain be nearby. These requirements were imposed because acrylates are skin, eye and respiratory tract irritants, but the problem lies mostly with the acrylated reactive diluent rather than with the acrylated resin (2,3). To avoid these problems, tests have been performed with use of trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate (TMPTMA) as a replacement for TMPTA. TMPTMA has been shown to be much less of an irritant than TMPTA, and is used in dental restorations. 

The most effective prorads for PVC are acrylic and allylic esters, such as triallyl cyanurate (TAC), trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate (TMPTMA), and trimethylolpropane triacrylate. The triacrylate is more reactive than the trimethacrylate, but it is more toxic and, for that reason, is used only seldom. The amounts of these additives are 1 to 5% of the formulation weight. ...

Crosslinking of PVC is known to occur on irradiation, with a low yield [Ohnishi et al., 1962]. More efficient crosslinking may be induced by irradiating PVC in the presence of multifunctional crosslinking agents [Salovey, 1973]. For example, plasticized PVC has been used as a wire and cable insulation. To enhance the crosslinking of PVC during electron irradiation, triallyl cyan-urate (TAC), trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate (TMPTMA), or trimethylolpropane triacrylate (TMPTA) have been used as the additives [Bradley, 1984]. 

As shown in Fig. 7.10A, the PLEC was fabricated with a simple sandwiched structure of ITO/polymer/Al. The active layer contained an alkoxyphenyl substituted poly(l,4-phenylene vinylene) (AP-PPV), trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate (TMPTMA), and lithium trifluoromethane sulfonate (LiTf). When a bias voltage was initially applied, the PIN junction was formed by electrochemical doping (Fig. 7.1 OB). At the same time, the ionic conduction channels would be cut off due to the polymerizing of small molecules...

The second kind is that of polyfunctional agents that could promote cross-linking (against chain scissioning). Trimethylol propane trimethacrylate (TMPTMA), trimethylol propane triacrylate (TMPTA) or triallyl isocyanurate (TAIC) belong to this category (Figure 9.3).

More recently, Szymczak (1970) and Szymczak and Manson (1974a,ft) have reported a comparison of reactivities in a series of acrylates and methacrylates selected to have approximately equal concentrations of double bonds per mole. In this study, four monomers were used ethylidene dimethacrylate (EDMA) (divinyl) ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) (divinyl, isomeric with EDMA) trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate (TMPTMA) (trivinyl) and pentaerythritol tetramethacrylate (PTMA) (tetravinyl) see Figure 7.8. Concentrations up to 10% (based on PVC) were examined concentrations of double bonds (based on PVC) were kept equal to within +10% (see Table 7.2). In order to induce flexibility into the PVC resins, approximately 25% of DOP plasticizer was added before irradiation.
