Like a simpler timeline, a sequence diagram does not identify root causes, and therefore it should be used as part of a combined methodology with other tools. In this respect, a sequence diagram may be used in place of the timeline within the two main incident investigation methodologies presented in this chapter. 

The path which must be followed in the development of a material from lab bench to consumer is long, torturous and expensive. As stated before it takes about twelve years and over 200 million to bring an entity to the point of being marketed. Part of that timeline is understandable considering the laws governing safety and efficacy. Outlined in Figure 1 are the major steps on the way to a pharmaceutical product. 

The proficiency test timeline is 15 calendar days upon receipt of the samples the test period is based on Paragraph 62 of Part II of the Verification Annex of the CWC, stipulating that the final inspection report must be completed within 30 days after the inspection. 

Even with the best intentions and careful review of the contract, either party may find that part of the way through the conduct of the activities it is necessary to revise the scope and perhaps the timeline and cost estimates. Provisions for how to approach such discussions should be provided in the contract, and these discussions may be best handled by senior management in both companies to preserve the working relationships of the members of any joint working teams. 

In assessing whether and, if so, to what extent these requirements are fulfilled, the following elements seem relevant the kind of information that would be required to be provided when requesting an inspection how a decision on such a request would be made whether there is a right of refusal on the part of the challenged state whether there is any quota or limit to the request or receiving of inspections whether there are any restrictions in terms of specifying inspection sites the timeline between the decision to conduct an inspection and its actual implementation and the intrusiveness of inspection activities. 

Although the study of materials chemistry is a relatively new entry in both undergraduate and graduate curricula, it has always been an important part of chemistry. Neolithic man (10,000-300 B.C.) was the first to realize that certain materials such as limestone, wood, shells, and clay were most easily shaped into materials used as utensils, tools, and weaponry. Applications for metallic materials date back to the Chalcolithic Age (4,000-1,500 B.C.), where copper was used for a variety of ornamental, functional, and protective applications. This civilization was the first to realize fundamental properties of metals, such as malleability and thermal conductivity. More importantly, Chalcolithic man was the first to practice top-down materials synthesis (see later), as they developed techniques to extract copper from oxide ores such as malachite, for subsequent use in various applications. 

As a part of planning, each member of the simulation team must be aware of his/her individual assignments, the deliverables, and timelines. The team members responsibilities must be stated explicitly and the simulation team facilitator must assure that all members fulfill their responsibilities in a timely manner.
