Tigers

Female tiger moths signify their presence to male moths by giving off a sex attractant (pheromone) The sex attractant has been isolated and found to be a 2 methyl branched alkane having a molecular weight of 254 What is this material... [Pg.101]

Area repellents are materials that are intended to keep animals away from a broad area. They include predator scent such as Hon or tiger manure, blood meal, tankage such as putrefied slaughterhouse waste, bone tar oil, rags soaked in kerosene or creosote, and human hair (84). Although few controlled tests have been mn on these materials in the past, more recent investigations of predator odors have shown promise (85). [Pg.122]

It is commercially prepared from benzaldehyde and hydrogen cyanide. Mandelonitrile is used by certain insects (tiger beedes, an African millipede) as a defense duid (38). After expelling the duid an enzyme catalyzes the conversion of mandelonitrile to benzaldehyde and HCN, which is usually fatal to the insect s enemy. [Pg.415]

The diazido compd can be detond by friction. It has an expl temp of 165° a Qc of 825.4 (avg) kcal/mole a Qf of 78.9kcal/mole and an impact sensy of 5.7cm using a 2kg wt and an Aberdeen Impact app with No 12 tools (vs 26.7cm for PETN). Theoretical calcns using the TIGER computer code detdthe flame temp (3120°K), force (4.46 inch-lbs/b) and chamber press (39800 psi) of M-2 proplnt when the drazide was substituted for NG in the formulation, (19.34%). [Pg.606]

Leaded gasoline was one of the country s top ten industrial chemicals during the 1960s it accounted for 90 percent of all automobile fuel sold in the United States. As Esso ads proclaimed, there was a tiger in the tank of almost every American car. Between 1926 and 1985, more than seven million tons of lead were burned as fuel additives. In terms of sheer volume, leaded gasoline was one of the most important organic chemicals that modern society has produced. [Pg.176]

To meet the new federal emissions standards, General Motors Corporation decided in 1970 to equip its cars with catalytic converters, which lead inactivates. Other carmakers followed suit, and leaded gasoline became one of the few environmentally unsafe products to be forced out of the market place. Get the lead out replaced put a tiger in your tank as the slogan of the environmental 1970s. Ethyl Corporation officials felt betrayed how could General Motors, the father of tetraethyl lead, sell its share of Ethyl for millions of dollars and then arrange for the product s demise ... [Pg.191]

In Figure 3.3, most of the animals that live in hot climates (lions, tigers, elephants, giraffes, wallabies, kangaroos) are close to each other on the map. This clustering of animals from warm environments has occurred even though the temperature of the environment in which the animals live is not a characteristic of the animals themselves, so it did not form part of the input data. [Pg.56]

Z,9S,10 )-9,10-Epoxyhenicos-6-ene (13) is the female sex pheromone of moths such as ruby tiger moth (Phragmatobiafuliginosa), fruit-piercing moth (Oraesia excavata), and painted apple moth (Teia anartoides). Scheme 23 summarizes Shi s synthesis of 13 based on Sharpless asymmetric dihydroxylation (AD) [36]. Mori synthesized 13 employing lipase to prepare A (Scheme 24) [37]. Alkylation of the acetylide anion C was possible neither with tosylate nor with iodide, but triflate B could alkylate C to give D. [Pg.18]
