Ticarcillin indications

The answer is b. (Hardman, pp 1077—1086.) Piperacillin is a broad-spectrum, semisynthetic penicillin for parenteral use. Its spectrum of activity includes various Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms including Pseudomonas. The indications for piperacillin are similar to those for car-benicillin, ticarcillin, and mezlocillin, with the primary use being sus-... [Pg.75]

Clavulanic acid is manufactured by SmithKline Beecham and is sold as oral and parenteral products in combination with amoxycillin under the trade name of Augmentin, and as an injectable product in combination with ticarcillin under the trade name of Timentin. Augmentin is prescribed for infections of the respiratory tract such as bronchitis, and ear, nose and throat infections such as otitis media and sinusitis. It is also indicated for infections of the urinary tract, such as gonorrhoea, and skin and soft tissue infections, which include cellulitis, impetigo and abscesses. Timentin meanwhile is used for the treatment of severe infections in hospitalised patients with impaired or suppressed host defences. [Pg.344]

If a 4-hour infusion is to be used in conjunction with ticarcillin, we advocate administration between doses of ticarcillin. If ticarcilhn is not indicated, we advocate that AmB should be given between two 30-min infusions of 0.5 L normal saline, intravenously. This amount of supplementation is based on empiric observation, and further studies are needed to ascertain whether lower amounts confer an equivalent degree of protection. If vomiting occurs, sodium supplementa-... [Pg.342]

TICARCILLIN/CLAVULANATE POTASSIUM (Timentin powder for injection 3 g ticarcillin (as disodium) and 0.1 g clavulanic acid (as potassium) (contains 4.75 mEq sodium and 0.15 mEq potassium/g), injection solution 3 g ticarcillin (as disodium) and 0.1 g clavulanic acid (as potassium) per 100 mL (contains 18.7 mEq sodium and 0.5 mEq potassium per 100 mL)) Ticarcillin/clavulanate potassium is an extended-spectrum penicillin. Ticarcillin inhibits bacterial cell wall mucopep-tide synthesis. Clavulanate lactamase enzymes are commonly found in microorganisms resistant to ticarcillin. They are indicated in the treatment of bacterial septicemia, skin and skin structure infections, lower respiratory tract infections, bone and joint infections, GU and gynecologic infections, and intra-abdominal infections caused by susceptible strains of bacteria. [Pg.690]

Ticarcillin, extended-spectrum penicillin, alpha-carbox-ypenicillin, is indicated for the treatment of bacterial septicemia, skin and soft-tissue infections, acute and chronic respiratory tract infections caused by susceptible strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus species (both indole-positive and indole-negative), and Escherichia coli and for genitourinary tract infections (complicated and uncomplicated) due to susceptible strains of P. aeruginosa, Proteus species (both indole-positive and indole-negative), E. coli, Enterobacter, and Streptococcus faecalis (enterococcus). [Pg.690]

Ticarcillin, an extended-spectrum penicillin that inhibits beta lactamase, is indicated in infections of the lower respiratory tract, urinary tract, bones and joints, skin and skin structures, and septicemia when caused by susceptible organisms. [Pg.691]
