Thought disturbances

Mood dysregulation and/or thought disturbance increase the probability of aggression. Recent data suggest a link between mental illness and violence individuals with psychotic or mood disorders are five times more likely to engage in violence than those in the normal population. Substance abuse more than doubles this risk (Swartz et ah, 1998). 

SNA was originally synthesized and developed as an anesthetic agent for human use by Parke, Davis and Co. under the name Sernyl.13-15 its human use was soon abandoned, because It sometimes produced postoperative thought disturbances and agitation. It is currently used, under the name Sernylan, as an immobilizing agent in veterinary medicine.

Analysis of BPRS factor scores showed that treatment with quetiapine resulted in selective improvement in the psychosis-related factors of thought disturbance and hostility/suspiciousness, as well as improvement in the mean BPRS positive-symptoms cluster score. By day 21, quetiapine was clinically and statistically superior to placebo in moderating negative symptoms. 

Psychosis A relatively severe form of mental illness characterized by marked thought disturbances and an impaired perception of reality. 

Obsessive-compulsive disorder is rarely diagnosed in African Americans (Friedman et al. 1993 Hatch et al. 1992 Paradis et al. 1994). Although there are no definitive studies, case reports suggest that many of these patients are diagnosed as being psychotic (Lawson 1999). The ego-dystonic obsessions in obsessive-compulsive disorder may easily be misinterpreted as delusions or a thought disturbance, and the compulsions may be mistaken for psychotic behavior (Hwang and Hollander 1993). 

Schizophrenia A major mental disorder lasting more than 6 months and characterized in part by thought disturbances, misinterpretations of reality, mood change (including blunted affect and inappropriate moods), communication problems (poverty of speech and coherence), and bizarre, withdrawn, or regressive behaviors. The five subtypes are disorganized, catatonic, paranoid, undifferentiated, and residual. 

Negative symptoms are social withdrawal, lack of emotional responsiveness and apathy positive symptoms are hallucinations (usually auditory), thought disturbances, delusions, restlessness and aggression. 

Treatment of schizophrenia with typical neuroleptics like for instance chlorpromazine, haloperidol or fluphenazine has a beneficial effect on the positive symptoms of schizophrenia (delusions, hallucinations and positive thought disturbances) but little effect on the negative symptoms (social withdrawal, blunted affect and apathy).

Finally, all of the trials in the FDA data set included the same measure of depression, a physician-rated scale called the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HRSD). The Hamilton scale is completed by doctors based on interviews and observations of patients. The doctor rates the patient s mood, thoughts about suicide, sleep disturbances and other symptoms of depression. For example, one point is given if the patient feels that life is not worth living, and four points are scored if the person has made a serious suicide attempt. The result is a numerical score that can range from o to 51. 

The solution, obtained by conventional diazotisation of the amine, contained some solid which was removed by filtration on a glass lfit. The solid, thought to be precipitated diazonium salt (possibly an internal salt), exploded violently when disturbed with a metal spatula. 

The mild detonations reported when the crystalline salt was disturbed [1] were thought to have been caused by presence of solvent ether in the crystals (6 mols of water may be replaced by 2 of ether) [2], This was later confirmed [3], and the formation of ethyl nitrate or diethyloxonium nitrate may have been involved, as the anhydrous salt functions as a powerful nitrator. Solutions of the nitrate in ether should not be exposed to sunlight to avoid the possibility of explosions. 

Long-term amphetamine abuse results in many damaging effects, not least of which is addiction. Chronic abusers exhibit symptoms that can include violent behavior, anxiety, confusion, and insomnia. They also can display a number of psychotic features, including paranoia, auditory hallucinations, mood disturbances, and delusions (for example, the sensation of insects creeping on the skin). The paranoia can result in homicidal as well as suicidal thoughts.
