One of the most effective ways to think about optimization is to visualize how a system s response changes when we increase or decrease the levels of one or more of its factors. A plot of the system s response as a function of the factor levels is called a response surface. The simplest response surface is for a system with only one factor. Where an effective informal system exists and is followed, the issue is one of style, not substance. The classification structure for PIFs used in this chapter is based on the model of human error as arising from a mismatch between demands and resources which was described in Chapter 1, Section 1.6 (Figure 1.6).
