Thickeners paper surface

Acrylamide is the first bulk chemical manufactured using an industrial biotransformation. Acrylamide which is produced 200000 t/a is an important industrial chemical that is mainly processed into water-soluble polymers and copolymers, which find applications as flocculants, paper-making aids, thickening agents, surface coatings, and additives for enhanced oil recovery. The chemical manufacture of acrylamide has been established for a long time, it is based on Cu-catalysis. The production of acrylamide using immobilized whole cells of Rhodococcus rhodochrous is a remarkable example of a lyase-catalyzed commercial process. The enzyme responsible for water addition to the double bond of acrylonitrile is nitrile hydratase (Eq. 4-17) ... [Pg.93]

Chem. Descrip. Styrene/maleic anhydride copolymer Uses Dispersant, emulsifier, thickener, binder, surface sizing agent in components of paper and paperboard in contact with aqueous, fatty, and dry foods Features Freeze/thaw stable easy to handle good for improving toner adhesion exc. sizing against a variety of penetrants when applied over alkaline or acid base... [Pg.573]

Poly(vinyl alcohol) will function as a non-ionic surface active agent and is used in suspension polymerisation as a protective colloid. In many applications it serves as a binder and thickener is addition to an emulsifying agent. The polymer is also employed in adhesives, binders, paper sizing, paper coatings, textile sizing, ceramics, cosmetics and as a steel quenchant. [Pg.391]

As is already known, the main application of the NFC is reinforcement of paper and polymeric compositions, while the use of NFC in the area of care and cure has been less studied. The general applications of NFC in the area of personal care can be as a water retainer, thickener for cosmetic creams, dispersions, and emulsions, etc. (Ankerfors, 2012 Aulin et al., 2010 Paakko et al., 2007, 2008 Xhanari et al., 2011). In addition, the surface-fimctionalized film of the nanofi-brillar cellulose may be a platform for immunoassays and diagnostics (Orelma et al., 2012). [Pg.279]
