Thermo-mechanical analysis (TMA)26 and DMTA292 have been used to study the viscoelastic properties of bread, a composite two-phase system. The moisture dependence of Tg was similar to that of pure amorphous starch and gluten.242,282 293-295 At the moisture content of bread, water exerts its full plasticization effect on the composite polymer matrix, reducing the effective Tg to about -10° to - 12°C,26,292 well below normal shelf life storage temperatures of this product.

Thermal expansion was determined with Thermo Mechanical Analysis (Perkin Elmer TMA-7) over a temperature range from -150°C to 180°C at heating rates that were equivalent to those used in the beam bending experiments. 

For the Prototype Repository Project, six different geometries were considered in a preliminary thermo-mechanical analysis. Figure 1 shows the basic characteristics of those models. DMTA Dynamic Thermo-Mechanical Analysis measures the mechanical properties of materials under stress as a function of time, temperature, and frequency. DETA Dynamic Electrical Thermal Analysis measures the electrical properties of materials as a function of time, temperature, and frequency. 

TMA (Thermo-Mechanical Analysis) measures the change in dimensions or in a mechanical property of the sample while it is subjected to a temperature regime. STA Simultaneous application of TGA and DSC to a single sample to yield more information than separate tests in different instruments. 

In thermo-mechanical analysis (TMA) the change in dimensions under a minimal load is measured as a function of temperature. This reveals the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and can also be used to detect other transitions, such as the glass transition.
