The client likely will benefit from continued involvement of family in the therapeutic process during aftercare. Many commonly reported relapse triggers are related to relationship stress (see Chapter 7), and family therapy may help reduce relationship stress. The families of children and adolescents with schizophrenic psychoses have to be included in the planning and design of therapy. Empirical research has shown, however, that ambitious family therapy designs have not reaped the benefits hoped for. The earlier in the diagnostic or therapeutic process a prognosticator can be applied, the more valuable it becomes. If, on the basis of the outcome of a prognostic test, a specific treatment can be chosen or patients can be counselled to refrain from any treatment, this test is more valuable than a test which can only be done during or after a treatment. 

I. We want this book to be theory-neutral. Each model and every therapist makes unique contributions to the therapeutic process. You might be an expert in cognitive-behavioral therapy, family systems theory, interpersonal therapy, or another model your expertise is a critical component of healing. However, because we assume that you already have expertise in some type of psychotherapy, that is not the focus of this book. 

As most therapists know, a single intervention is only part of the therapeutic process. In the case of starting medication it is equally, if not more, important to understand how to talk with your patients about medication, how to engage and collaborate with the medical professionals who prescribe your patients medication, and how to support your patients and their family members after your patient has started medication. We review these process issues in the following chapters.
