The Relevancy Group

Many of these reactions are not observed at all when the relevant groups are allowed to come together in bimolecular processes in aqueous solution. For mechanistic work involving intermolecular reactions, therefore, it is necessary to use activated substrates. Much of what we know about the relevant reactions of esters, for example, comes from studies using aryl esters like p-nitrophenyl acetate, or acyl-activated compounds like ethyl trifluoroacetate (Bruice and Benkovic, 1966 Jencks, 1969 Bender, 1971). 

The contribution of these groups is greatly enhanced if they act in a concerted manner so that, as an electron is withdrawn from one part of the substrate, another is donated to a different part. This is known as a push-pnlF mechanism. It is only possible when the relevant groups in the active site are held in precisely the correct orientation so as to interact in this way with the substrate. It is possible to conduct case-control studies by identifying the relevant groups of patients from the database. 

Tliis description combined with Table 2, however, does not necessarily mean that the actual variation of pKa of the relevant group in the material is from ca.10 to ca.5. The actual pKa of the ionic groups in materials could be altered significantly due to the electrostatic interaction between these groups. This electrostatic interaction, on the other hand, could vary significantly according to the conformation that constituent macromolecules take, for example, the secondary structure of poly(amino acid).

Different assumptions for s were proposed in the literature. Barton and Lee (1968) suggested s to be equal to the weight- or mole fraction of the relevant group in relation to the structural unit. Weyland et al. (1970) put s equal to Z , the number of backbone atoms of the contributing group. Becker (1978) and Kreibich and Batzer (1979) identified s, with the number of freely and independently oscillating elements in the backbone of the structural unit. In general s is held as a kind of "entropy of transition". 

Eq. (6.4) has been applied to the available literature data on Tg s of polymers, in all nearly 600 from this study the correlation rules for Yg have been derived. It appeared that the Ygi-values of the relevant groups are not independent of some other groups present in the structural unit. 

The cations are prepared from 2,5-disilaheptanes, 3, by hydride transfer reactions. The transient silylium ion 4 undergoes an intramolecular reaction to the more stable cyclic onium ion 2. The precursor silanes, 3, are synthesized by salt metathesis reaction from compounds of the type Ph2ELi, where E is the relevant Group 15 element, and the silylchloride 5. In either case a) or b) it is immediate that the relevant group is of p-torsion and p-divisible and thus a Barsotti-Tate group. 

Researchers need to interact with those interested and affected parties that have a stake in the issue they are investigating. This is not merely to enhance communication, but to identify the right question to address in research. It is a tragedy when a completed research project is unable to answer the ordinary questions that those in policy, the public or the media want to ask. Researchers need to ask relevant constituencies, if we are doing research in this area, what questions would you want answered By consulting all the relevant groups over this, researchers will build a more complete picture of the topic under investigation and the various interests involved (Scott et al, 2005).
