Most photochemical reactions are not very polar and often involve free radical intermediates. But initiation of a reaction by light is no infallible indication of a radical mechanism, as is clear from the example of the photo-ionization of certain triarylmethyl cyanides.448 [Pg.244]

In spite of such exceptions ionic reactions initiated by light are rare. The reason is probably to be found in the important part played by the solvent in ionization. An ordinary ionization reaction produces solvated rather than free ions and its free energy is very much lowered by the solvation of the ions. It is the solvation energy that usually makes it possible for ionic reactions to coinpete with related radical reactions. In an ionization reaction in which the energy needed is supplied directly by a photon, the solvent molecules must be arranged in advance in the positions they will need to occupy about the solvated ions.
