The contest

In an attempt to define the exact amount of timesavings associated with the use of microwave-assisted library synthesis, our group devised a method by which the actual control thermal reactions would be performed side-by-side with the microwave reactions by two independent researchers. Furthermore, it was decided that the two scientists would not share experimental results or methodologies so as to not affect each other s research. This series of experiments was labeled the Contest 15. 

In this library example, the two scientists were each given the same scaffold to synthesize. The contestants could use any route of synthesis however, only one of the chemists had access to the microwave system. The two scientists would keep accurate measurement of the time spent on the synthesis, including both performing reactions and literature searches. At the end of the experiment, the scientists would compare the time spent on the synthesis and the routes taken to the final products. The project

Even after 10 years and nearly 700 projects, the two thousand employees continued to identify high-return projects. The contests in 1991, 1992, and 1993 each had in excess of 100 winners, with an average return on investment of 300 percent. Total energy savings to Dow from the projects of those three years exceeded 10 million, while productivity gains came to about 50 million. 

Approaches of de novo predictions, which try to calculate how the structural elements are folded into the 3D-stmcture (tertiary structure) of complete proteins are nowadays far away from reliable large-scale applications. On the other, hand this topic is under strong development indicated by recent successful results at the contest for structural prediction methods CASP4. With the fast growing number of experimentally solved 3D-stmctures of protein and new promising approaches like threading tools combined with experimental structural constraints, one can expect more reliable de novo predictions for 3D-protein structures in the future.

A count is a constructive claim used during the interference to define the contested subject matter between the two parties. A phantom count refers to a constructive claim that does not necessarily correspond to a single claim from either subject application but is assembled to capture the subject matter from two substantially similar claims from the two applications. For purposes of the present discussion, we can think of the count as an ordinary patent claim.
