Thread-like

Natural gums are exuded in a variety of shapes characteristic of the species of origin. These shapes include the globular shape of gum arable and the flakes or thread-like ribbons of gum tragacanth (36). 

Holden et al. [27] reported the first Raman results on nanotubes produced from a Co-catalyzed carbon arc. Thread-like material removed from the chamber was encapsulated in a Pyrex ampoule in -500 Torr of He gas for Raman scattering measurements. Sharp first-order lines were observed at 1566 and 1592 cm and second-order lines al 2681 and 3180 cm , but only when cobalt was present in the core of the anode. Many properties of silicates can be understood in terms of the type of network lattice formed. In the one-dimensional networks, shown in Figure 17-8, the atoms within a given chain are strongly linked by covalent bonds but the chains interact with each other through much weaker forces. This is consistent with the thread-like properties of many of these silicates. The asbestos minerals are of this type.

Three types of thread-like appendages may be found growing from bacterial cells flagella, pili (fimbriae) and F-pili (sex strands). 

Brown Algae, such as rhodophyta and phaeophyta. They consist of numerous compilations of thread-like cells, which contain specific brown coloured pigments, like Fe2+ and Mn2+. 

This is not equally valid for macromolecular compounds, in which a molecule consists of a nearly unlimited number of atoms. The interactions with surrounding molecules cannot be neglected in this case. For instance, for a substance consisting of thread-like macromolecules, it makes a difference to the physical properties whether the molecules are ordered in a crystalline manner or whether they are tangled. 

Activated factor X, along with Ca++ ion, factor V, and PF3 (collectively referred to as the prothrombin activator), catalyzes the conversion of prothrombin into thrombin. Thrombin then catalyzes the conversion of fibrinogen into fibrin, an insoluble, thread-like polymer. In the nucleus of each cell, the DNA molecule is packaged into thread-like structures called chromosomes. Each chromosome is made up of DNA tightly coiled many times around proteins called histones that support its structure.
