Polyurethane multiblock copolymers of the type described by Eqs. 2-197 and 2-198 constitute an important segment of the commercial polyurethane market. The annual global production is about 250 million pounds. These polyurethanes are referred to as thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs) (trade names Estane, Texin). They are among a broader group of elastomeric block copolymers referred to as thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs). Crosslinking is a requirement to obtain the resilience associated with a rubber. The presence of a crosslinked network prevents polymer chains from irreversibly slipping past one another on deformation and allows for rapid and complete recovery from deformation. [Pg.142]

The polyester-type thermoset polyurethanes were commercialized in 1942, and the linear thermoplastic ones (TPU) ten years later. Polyester-type TPU, Texin resins for extrusion and injection molding, were introduced in 1961, whereas polyether-type, Roylar , in 1971. Owing to great diversity of the ingredients, the TPU performance can be readily modihed. Por this reason, as well as because of the cost, TPU s are seldom blended. Their use can be divided into three groups (i) blends with POM, (ii) blends in which TPU is used as a com-patibilizer and impact modifier, and (iii) others. [Pg.74]

Texin 3000 and Texin 4000 are the commercial blends. In the first TPU is the matrix, while in the second PC plays this role. The resins are used for the production of gears, tubings, housings, top-lifts, extruded profiles, for the automotive industry and consumer goods. [Pg.74]

PC/TPU Texin 3000) or TPU/PC (Texin 4000) blends are hygroscopic. Since the TPU in the blends is a polyester-urethane, the material is susceptible to hydrolysis. Equilibrium moisture at 50 %RH is below 0.4% and it is reached in less than 40 hours, while that at 95 %RH, is 1.2% and reached in 100 hours. Pigments or additives to be added to the blend must be dried as well. [Pg.686]

For PCITPU or TPUIPC blends (Texin tm), the screw should have a long gradual transition zone and a long metering zone. [Pg.697]

PC is also blended with a polyester urethane TPU (Texin 3000 PC/TPU, Texin 4000 TPU/PC). For these systems, screw machines are preferable with L/D = 15 and compression ratio = 2-3. [Pg.722]
