Tetracycline local application

The broad antibacterial activity of rifaximin as well as its topical action make this antibiotic suitable for intrapocket administration in periodontal disease. As a matter of fact, local application of rifaximin compares well with tetracyclines and metronidazole in other extra-GI diseases, i.e. skin infections and BY, respectively (see above). On the other hand, rifampicin (rifampin), another rifamy-cin derivative, has been successfully used in the treatment... 

Local Application Except for local use in the eye, topical use of the tetracyclines is not recommended. Minocychne sustained-release microspheres for subgingival administration are used in dentistry as an adjunct in patients with adult periodontitis. 

Topical Antibiotic Monotherapy Localized impetiginized eczema lesions can be treated successfully with topical fusidic acid or mupirocin, whereas topical application of other antibiotics (neomycin as obsolete aminoglycosid, tetracyclines, or polymyxines) should be avoided.84 Especially in children with AD, fusidic acid resistance seems to be a particular problem reflecting the chronicity and the extent of the disease (see Section 30.2.2). 

The application of MIPs as the stationary phase in solid-phase extraction (SPE), often referred to as molecularly imprinted polymer solid-phase extraction (MIS P E), is a rapidly growing area [197-199]. With MISPE, highly specific enrichment of substances present at trace levels is possible. The technique has been applied to the analysis of drugs, for example, caffeine [200], scopolamine [201], naproxen [202], tetracycline [203], cholesterol [204] and local anesthetics [205], as well as environmental pollutants, exemplified by organophosphate flame retardants [206-208], triazines in soil and vegetable samples [71] and naphthalene sulfonates in river water [209]. 

Among the multi-class methods reported in the literature, a procedure that involves sample dissolution with EDTA under mildly acidic conditions (pH 4.0) followed by SPE with Oasis HLB cartridges has been applied for the simultaneous analysis of macroiides, tetracyclines, quinolones, and sulfonamides in honey samples Separation and determination by UPLC-MS/MS enabled the analysis of 17 compounds in <5 min. Mean recoveries ranged from 70% to 120%, except for three compounds (doxycycline, erythromycin, and tilmicosin), which had recoveries of >50%. Application of the method to the analysis of honey samples obtained from different beekeepers and local supermarkets... 

In the present study, tetracycline was selected because of its wide application, both locally and systemically, in the treatment of periodontal diseases. Tetracycline has been shown to be effective against many of the common periodontopathic bacteria, in particular, against Prevotella intermedia and Porphyromonas gingivalis [204-206]. In the current study, two commercially available bacterial strains were selected to meet the preliminary goal of whether the activity of antibiotics can be preserved after incorporation into preparations (Table 11.3)...
