Gestation is the period during which each individual s sexuality is first expressed and shaped. But impact on the organization of fetal sexuality seems to be most effective during certain sensitive gestational periods, windows of vulnerability. Developmentally, thyroid hormones interact with sex hormones such that hypothyroidism prolongs the critical period for testosterone-induced defeminization (see below) [3] in contrast, the hyperthyroid state prematurely terminates the sensitivity to testosterone [3]. Undoubtedly, an important link in these and other effects is synapse formation. Hypothyroidism increases synaptic density, at least transiently [3]. Interesting parallels with synapse formation are reported for learning behavior in rats neonatal hypothyroidism impairs learning ability, whereas hyperthyroidism accelerates learning initially, followed by a decline later in life [3].

Anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS), which are analogs of the male hormone testosterone, are used among athletes and bodybuilders. AAS alter the hormonal systems of males and females, and induce many adverse effects. In addition to the sex-related changes, violent behavior and psychological dependence can also occur. The use of AAS in professional sports as well as in high school sports has aroused considerable attention. 

Anabolic steroids, antidepressants and drugs of abuse affect libido, potency, and ejaculatory function. Anabolic steroids are derivatives of testosterone, and have strong genitotropic effects. There is published evidence indicating that anabolic steroids increases sexual desire however, the frequency of erectile dysfunction is also increased. Treatment with the antidepressant fluoxetine has been associated with sexual side effects including delayed or nonexistent ejaculation and hyposexuality. Mice treated in utero with the anideukemic agent 5-aza-2/-deoxycytidine exhibit abnormal reproductive behavior and low reproductive capacity.
