C22H34O2. A straight-chain fatty acid with 5 double bonds. A major component of fish oils and the oils of marine animals, clupeine Protamine class protein found in the sperm and testicles of the herring. On hydrolysis it gives about 90% of argenine.

LD is well known to be the combined activity of 5 isoenzymes (35) which in turn are thought to result from the combination in varying proportions of two basic subunits, heart (H) and muscle (M) subunits, to form a tetramer (36). Additional isoenzymes in skin and testicle have been described, and it may be that the LD isoenzyme spectrum ultimately will turn out to be complex. 

The expression of TRPVl in the bladder is, however, not restricted to afferent nerves urothelium, detrusor muscle and fibroblasts also express TRPVl in the human bladder [140]. The implication of these findings for intravesical vanilloid therapy is unclear [141], but the increase in TRPVl immunoreactivity in the urothelium in patients with neurogenic detrusor overactivity (that occurs in concert with increased TRPVl in bladder af-ferents) is a very intriguing finding [142]. In the male urogenital system, TRPVl is also present in testicles, prostate and scrotal skin [143], and it was postulated that TRPVl ligands may be beneficial in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia [144].

LCso values of 900, 570, 275, and 200ppm have been reported in rats for exposure times of 0.5, 1, 3, and 4 hours, respectively. Exposure of rats to 2 00 ppm or above for 4 hours caused injury to the liver, kidneys, and thymus. Pulmonary edema and congestion were seen in the lungs, and surviving males had testicles that were small on gross examination and microscopically showed aspermatogenesis, destruction of the stem cells, and effects on the interstitial tissue.

Oral exposure of adult rats and mice caused effects on fertility in males and females and serious effects on the testicles.
