Urogenital system

The physical barriers include the skin, mucus membranes, epidermis and dermis. The skin maintains a low pH because of lactic and fatty acids. The mucus membranes in the respiratory system, urogenital system and gastrointestinal (GI) system create a substantial surface barrier. Epidermis and dermis constitute additional physical barriers. The dermis also produces sebum, which maintains an acidic pH due to its lactic and fatty acid content.

The expression of TRPVl in the bladder is, however, not restricted to afferent nerves urothelium, detrusor muscle and fibroblasts also express TRPVl in the human bladder [140]. The implication of these findings for intravesical vanilloid therapy is unclear [141], but the increase in TRPVl immunoreactivity in the urothelium in patients with neurogenic detrusor overactivity (that occurs in concert with increased TRPVl in bladder af-ferents) is a very intriguing finding [142]. In the male urogenital system, TRPVl is also present in testicles, prostate and scrotal skin [143], and it was postulated that TRPVl ligands may be beneficial in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia [144]. 

Reliable correlations were found between lead concentrations in the soil and the incidence rates in the population of Dnepropetrovsk. In the adults, the pollution levels were associated with complications in pregnancy and delivery, diseases of urogenital, nervous and bone-and-muscular system, blood problems and tumors. In the children, the blood, blood forming organs, respiratory system and the muscles and bones were most frequently affected. 

When administered into the newly developed chicken embryo, 6-methyluracil was found to possess strong teratogenic activity. The compound produces abnormalities in 85 per cent of the embryos at 4 mg/kg [270]. In pregnant rats this pyrimidine causes damage to 10-day-old embiyos. Microanatomical examination reveals urogenital system abnormalities (e.g. hydronephrosis, uretal oedema) [271].

Like calcitonin, CGRP is present in large quantities in the C cells of the thyroid gland. It is also distributed widely in the central and peripheral nervous systems, in the cardiovascular system, the gastrointestinal tract, and the urogenital system. CGRP is found with substance P (see above) in some of these regions and with acetylcholine in others. 

Complications of alprostadil injections include hematoma and ecchymoses (8%) and systemic effects (6%), which mostly occur in the urogenital system (testicular pain and swelling, scrotal pain and edema, changes in urinary frequency, hematuria, and pelvic pain) (62). In 1 % there were symptoms related to hypotension.

A number of other processes are in continuous development. Clinical applications of these therapies in the urogenital and cardiovascular systems, in peripheral and central nervous systems, pancreas, joint cartilage restoration, etc., are being studied. However, almost all procedures suffer from a common limitation the availability of donor cells. Cell therapies have to begin with a relatively high number of cells, and stem cells, irrespective of their origin, are always a minor subpopulation in tissues.
