In this chapter, we will describe the history and process of lead discovery from initial target identification and disease validation through the lead identification process itself, culminating in lead optimization and pre-clin-ical candidate selection. The full range of technologies and approaches that have been brought to bear on this complex activity will also be highlighted. 

The decision was made to evaluate the treatment of sediments in in situ conditions since the candidate areas, that is, boat slips like Minnesota Slip, were not being considered for navigation dredging. Consequently, the ECGO technology was selected as the in situ treatment method.

A company selecting a toller will be well served if they ensure candidates received a clear set of proposal requirements. When qualified finalists are given a project scope based upon an accurate technology package, they can produce a bid that is easily evaluated. 

Technology transfer is a critical step in ensuring project success. The client must recognize that each toller is different in regard to how they progress from the laboratory to a test run to production. The toller selection step should have revealed that each candidate company possessed different levels of skill, experience and management culture. 

Zeolite chemistry is an excellent example of how a three-dimensional surface can alter the course of chemical reactions, selecting for one product out of a host of potential candidates. In addition to the many commercial applications that they have found, shape-selective zeolites have provided the basis for a rich new area of catalytic science and technology, one expected to spawn yet more materials, knowledge, and applications.
