The first mobile telephony systems were pre-cellular services. The base station was hosted by a powerful broadcast tower, which was normally located in the centre of a metropolitan area covering a wide area of 60-80 km radius (Paetsch 1993, p. 23). Subscribers could not move from one of these areas to another dui -ing calls and the caller had to know in which area the person he or she wanted to call was circulating. The difference between cellular and pre-cellular mobile telephony is that in a cellular system, a user can move from one zone to another zone during a call without reinitiating the call. This is possible because a cellular [Pg.132]

When making an LCA for a product or technical concept, all these steps are not determined from the start at each occasion. It is common to use readymade lists of characterization and weighting factors. In this way, the impact assessment is speeded up. Examples from such lists are shown in Table 15.2. [Pg.1363]

In vitro selection strategies can be sub-divided into two types direct and indirect selections. These two types of selection experiments directed at the isolation of synthetic catalytic nucleic acids differ mainly by their technical concept, their design and their outcome. [Pg.110]

It is common for team members to disagree initially as to causes, remedies, probable sequence of occurrences, scope of investigation activities, and sometimes on process technical concepts. Active deliberation and open exchange of ideas, opinions, and experience are critical to the function of the synergistic team approach. As the investigation develops, there will normally be a series of regular team meetings to ... [Pg.110]

Owing to the extreme diversity of the textile processes and products, it is impossible to develop a realistic concept for an efficient wastewater treatment without detailed analysis of the particular situation of a textile plant. The more intelligently the applied technical concept has been designed, the lower will be the expected costs for installation and working of the equipment. [Pg.366]

The Greek word y was used also for the dome-shaped receiver of glass placed over distilling apparatus to act as a condenser of vapors. See Borthclot, Introduction, pp. 132-134. The word thus conveys a double sense, a popular and a technical concept. [Pg.163]

The MHR-T refers to HTGR facilities representing one of the advanced areas of new-generation nuclear power development and having inherent safety feature. The technical concept is based on ... [Pg.72]

In the 1960s and 1970s chemical plants were expanding in many areas. Many of the technical concepts of process safety were not highly developed nor fully publicized. As a result, management did not provide a sustained focus on the potential process safety problems. [Pg.294]

The technical conception of an SMB is not easy, as this technology requires high precision for all the flow rates ( usually better than 1%), and great care must be taken with all the connections between the different lines to minimize dead volumes. Moreover, all the columns should be nearly identical, and very stable. This can be achieved even with soft gels, provided that an adapted procedure is used.13 Note that if rough solutions are implemented, dreams can be transformed into nightmares. [Pg.482]

The concept here is to try and make better drugs from a very effective drug with multiple effects. You do it by dissecting the multiple actions of clinically active drugs. Unfortunately, it is not easy to describe this without continued reference to rather technical concepts. [Pg.127]

Accountability is, perhaps, a unique feature of the PNGV. Accountability consists of three elements hardware deliverables, visible milestones, and external technical audit. The hardware dehverables, which are obligations of the industry partners, consist of proof-of-technical-concept vehicles to be delivered in calendar year 2000 and production-feasible prototypes to be delivered in calendar year 2004. [Pg.129]

The technical concept of biphasic catalysis is simple and allows an elegant process design. Regarding the reciprocal miscibilities of the substrate and the catalyst solution (S and C in Figure 5), three basic modifications of the two-phase process under the introductory prerequisites may be considered. [Pg.608]

Thereafter, Frank developed a novel technical concept for the cellulose paper sheet-supported simultaneous parallel synthesis utilizing conventional Fmoc/tBu chemistry [78]. As he carried out different coupling reactions simultaneously on distinct areas of the same sheet of paper instead of using separate pieces of paper for individual peptides, this approach is named SPOT synthesis. Recent advances in this field have expanded the SPOT technology beyond peptidic systems into... [Pg.69]

How well does the statement avoid introducing technical concepts that themselves require extensive discussion For example, does a statement of the first law mention energy Does a statement of the second law mention entropy With no obvious way to measure such concepts, we must resign ourselves to lengthy explanations. Concealed somewhere in those explanations the actual content of the law at hand is most likely to be introduced. Indeed, property, state, work, heat, energy, equilibrium, temperature, reversibility, entropy, probability, and information are... [Pg.255]

It is essential that farmers and other users understand the biological and technical concepts underlying these technologies. [Pg.156]

In particular, the concepts of biphasic catalysis were used in telomerization (Section 6.9), oligomerization (Section 6.12), hydrogenation (Section 6.2), and hydro-formylation (Section 6.1) reactions. Therefore these reactions will be considered in the following sections in some more detail and thus complement the appropriate Chapters as far as technical concepts are concerned. [Pg.234]

Ruhrchemie AG was the first to seize upon the idea of applying a water-soluble rhodium catalyst and thus commercialize a process which has been elaborated on a laboratory scale by Rhone-Poulenc earlier [13, 14]. It took only two years of intensive research to develop the technical concept and to erect the first plant, which went on-stream in 1984 [15]. By 1987 the second unit was already built and today the total capacity for n-butyraldehyde amounts to more than 350000 tons per year [16, 17]. An additional plant for the production of n-pentanal from n-butene was brought on-stream in 1995 (see Section 6.1.3.1.8). [Pg.382]
