The traditional areas of wet chemistry came under very close scrutiny and it was felt that whilst the overall size of Part D could be justifiably reduced, the chapter on titrimetry required modification to include a section on titrations in non-aqueous solvents as these are of particular application to organic materials. It was also felt that environmentally important titrations such as those for dissolved oxygen and chemical oxygen demand should be introduced for the first time. By way of contrast to this we considered that gravimetry has greatly diminished in application and justified a substantial reduction in volume. This in no way undermines its importance in terms of teaching laboratory skills, but the original multitude of precipitations has been substantially pruned and experimental details abbreviated. [Pg.904]

Mentoring relationships provide an effective method of learning by avoiding the limitations of traditional teaching and learning methods. The unique positive characteristics associated with mentoring as a development method are as follows ... [Pg.18]

The new research frontiers in chemical engineering, some of which represent new applications for the discipline, have important implications for education. A continued emphasis is needed on basic principles that cut across many apphcations, but a new way of teaching those principles is also needed. Students must be exposed to both traditional and novel applications of chemical engineering. The American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) has set in motion a project to incorporate into undergraduate chemical engineering courses examples and problems from emerging applications of the discipline. The committee applauds this work, as well as recent AIChE moves to allow more flexibility for students in accredited departments to take science electives. [Pg.19]

In a recent paper Schwartz (2006, p. 984) points to the contradiction between the nature of chemical research and the nature of traditional chemistry teaching ... [Pg.41]

During and after programmes of professional development and curriculum evolution, any innovatory curriculum in the triplet relationship will be put into operation in classrooms. As the pmpose of teaching is to promote learning, what should be done in classrooms to maximise the desired learning Black Atkin (1996) have summarised the traditional assumptions about learning that have proved so unsatisfactory in the past. These are that... [Pg.343]

The Book of Alchemy teaches its readers how to penetrate the obscure symbolic language of the alchemists. . . understand how alchemical transformation can initiate a profound change of consciousness, claimed by practitioners to bring eventual union with the Divine. . . practice traditional meditations and exercises. . . prepare herbal alchemical elixirs to benefit the body. . . and discover how the alchemists search for purity can become a twenty-first- century model for spiritual development"... [Pg.361]

More than 4,000 years old, traditional Chinese medicine continues to be widely practiced in China and in western countries. Traditional Chinese medicine teaches that good health is the result of harmony and balance between five basic elements earth, water, fire, wood and metal. Also important to health are the two types of energy Yin and Yang, constituting a vital substance that circulates through the body. Drug therapy has been one of the means used in Chinese medicine to keep these elements and the flow of energy in balance. Many of the same herbs used thousands of years ago in China could be the source of new pharmaceuticals in Western medicine... [Pg.570]

The vast majority of Taoist texts on alchemy, meditation, and sexuality are directed at male practitioners. The Sexual Teachings of the White Tigress presents traditions that focus on women, traditions that stem from a long line of courtesans and female Taoists... [Pg.574]
