The reaction of 6-octadecynoic acid (tariric acid) with potassium permanganate yields dodecanoic and 1,6-hexanedioic acid. [Pg.72]

Alkyne oxidation reactions are of little value now but were used bi > tortcally in Uie structure -detemiination of substances isolated fron) nau-ral sources. For example, the location of the triple bond in the chain of tariric acid was established by finding that oxidation with KMnO., gax e dodecar. c add and hexanedioic acid ... [Pg.306]

Although the compound known today as dehydromatricaria ester (1) was obtained crystalline from essential oils as long ago as 1826 the first correct structure assignment for a natural acetylene, tariric acid (octadec-6-ynoic acid), a component of the seed fat of the Simarubaceae Picramnia tariri DC., was published in 1902". The elucidation of the structure of lachnophyllum ester (2) from the Compositae Lachnophyllum gossipinum Bge. appeared in 1935 and was followed from 1941 onwards by those of several acetylenes from Compositae species headed by matricaria... [Pg.108]

From the seed fats of a few tree families (e.g. Simarubaceac, Santalaceae, Olacaceae) were isolated several Cig and Q, fatty acids with differently-situated triple bonds, of which tariric acid and the acid 4 are examples. These acids originate... [Pg.109]

More than 1000 natural products contain carbon-carbon triple bonds. Many, such as stearolic acid and tariric acid are fatty acids—carboxylic acids with unbranched chains of 12-20 carbon atoms—or are derived from them. [Pg.361]

The most important monoacetylenic acids are tariric (18 1 6a) and crepenynic (18 2 9cl2a) though other examples have also been recognized. Tariric acid has long been known as a component of seed oils of the Picramnia species. Its isomer, stearolic acid, though easily made in the laboratory from oleic acid, occurs only rarely as a minor component in Santalaceae seed oils where more unsaturated mono- and poly-acetylenic compounds are also present (see below). Two rare acids related to stearolic acid are 17 1 (8 ) and 18 2 (9al7e). [Pg.14]

The presence of an acetylenic bond in a natural product, tariric acid (I) was reported near the beginning of the Twentieth Century (Arnaud, 1902). [Pg.189]
