Target Techniques

Techniques for handling the targets inside the accelerator and for observing the beam and the dose received by the target are mentioned under this heading. A comprehensive description is available in The problems connected with the interaction of ion beams with gases will be treated in Sect. 4.4.2.

It is interesting to note, however, that at higher energies heavy ions can produce comparable yields to protons and at much lower specific energy. The main reason is that thick-target techniques now become feasible for heavy ions as well. The consequence is that, microampere-for-microampere at 50 MeV/u, ZC projectiles should be the equivalent of 600 MeV protons for isotope production, and are possibly better for the most exotic products [HARM]. 

Similarly, topical targeting techniques (including advanced aerosol systems and dermal or transdermal formulations) have been introduced or are about to be introduced that provide prolonged localized delivery or alternative means of systemic delivery. Both pose problems of a different kind (and perhaps magnitude), depending on whether the lungs or the skin, respectively, are the site of action or the portal of entry for systemic delivery.

We have briefly reviewed polymer assemblies from block copolymers, their biodistribution, and the targeting technique that guides them to a specific site in the body. In this section, we will describe the practical efforts that have been made in the field of recent DDS using polymer assemblies.

Proactive and reactive recovery techniques such as the ones here described, but also many others, can be implemented in critical systems. However, it would be highly interesting to assess their actual convenience for a given system before to carry out them physically. Thereby, we think that the models developed in previous section can be useful for this purpose and with this thought in mind, we show in this section how a software design can offer interfaces through which eventually it will be combined, at UML level, with the FT target techniques.
