Dissolved Air Flotation. Dissolved air flotation (DAF) is used to separate suspended soflds and oil and grease from aqueous streams and to concentrate or thicken sludges. Air bubbles carry or float these materials to the surface where they can be removed. The air bubbles are formed by pressurizing either the influent wastewater or a portion of the effluent in the presence of air. When the pressurized stream enters the flotation tank which is at atmospheric pressure, the dissolved air comes out of solution as tiny, microscopic bubbles. Dissolved air flotation is used in many wastewater treatment systems, but in the United States it is perhaps best known with respect to hazardous waste because it is associated with the Hsted waste, K048, DAF flotation soflds from petroleum refining wastewaters. Of course, the process itself is not what is hazardous, but the materials it helps to remove from refining wastewaters. [Pg.161]

The second main reason for wastewater quality monitoring is related to process control, particularly for treatment plants where analysers and sensors are generally used with physico-chemical or biological reactors, including settling tanks. The septic tank system is the oldest and most widely used anaerobic treatment system. It was introduced at the end of the 19th century and is composed of a tank and an absorption field. The primary function of the tank is the biological digestion of waste organic matter under anaerobic conditions, followed by the separation of solids from the incoming wastewater. [Pg.281]

Wastewater treatment systems can be classified, in addition to pretreatment, as preliminary, primary, secondary, and tertiary (advanced) treatments. Pretreatment of industrial wastewater is required to prevent adverse effects on the municipal wastewater treatment plants. Preliminary treatment is considered as any physical or chemical process that precedes primary treatment. The preliminary treatment processes may consist of influent screening and grit removal. Its function is mainly to protect subsequent treatment units and to minimize operational problems. Primary treatment is defined as the physical or chemical treatment for the removal of settleable and floatable materials. The screened, degritted raw wastewater from preliminary treatment flows to the primary clarification tanks, which are part of the primary treatment facilities. Secondary wastewater treatment is the process that uses biological and chemical treatment to accomplish substantial removal of dissolved organics and colloidal materials. The secondary treatment facilities may be comprised of biological reactor and secondary clarification basins. Tertiary (advanced) wastewater treatment is used to achieve pollutant reductions by methods other than those used in primary and secondary treatments. The objective of tertiary wastewater treatment is to improve the overall removal of suspended solids, organic matter, dissolved solids, toxic substances, and nutrients. [Pg.191]
