Water washing tank cleaning

The transport of phthalates by road tankers and ships within Europe is carried out by international companies with sophisticated tank cleaning facihties. Wash waters from these modem faciUties are passed through a series of separators to remove any residual plasticizer which is then incinerated. It is estimated that, as a result of cleaning and spillages, the maximum emission to the environment is 80 t/yr. 

The chemical and oil refining industries employ a variety of methods to clear and clean storage tanks, pressure vessels, and pipelines as a preparation for maintenance or the actual maintenance itself. Depending on the job, water washing may not be suitable and the planners may use various acids and alkalis for this activity. There can be risks associated with such reactive chemicals, as noted in the following paragraphs. 

To use an ultrasonic cleaner, immerse the item to be cleaned in the cleaning solution within the device s tank. There are general-purpose and industrial-strength cleaning solutions as well as specific cleaning solutions for jewelry, oxides, and buffing compound removers. Turn the ultrasonic cleaner on for several minutes, and see if your item is clean. If not, repeat the process and/or try an alternate cleaning method. After an item has been cleaned, rinse as you would with a soap and water wash. 

The use of detergent-free ultrasonic washing may be the best method to clean small plastic parts. In this type of washer, clean water is placed in a tank that is subjected to ultrasonic (high-frequency) vibrations. Thousands of small bubbles form from the ultrasonic agitation. These bubbles scrub the part s surface and clean it without the use of heavy detergents or solvents.

After every use the vacuum filter should be cleaned, and all sludge drained from the unit. This sludge and wash water should not be returned to the sludge storage tank but to the raw sewage channel or to a digester. 

The bottom water recovery system uses existing wells or new wells to create the water recovery system for removal of the water used to wash the contaminated soil. Reverse leaching or soil washing can be conducted by controlling the water levels within the tank. This design minimizes the volume of clean ex situ water entering the system for treatment. Extremely dense clays may be difficult to treat with this technology. 

Good housekeeping Keep toxicants and dusts contained. Use dikes around tanks and pumps. Provide water and steam connections for area washing. Provide lines for flushing and cleaning. Provide well-designed sewer system with emergency containment.
