Syrian rue

There is a valid reason for this commingling of the reports of the effects of this chemical and plant, however. In many peoples minds, the two materials are felt to be exclusively monoamineoxidase inhibitors, and to be interchangeable. I recently read the following bit of advice somewhere on the internet. "If you really want to get off on shrooms, take some harmaline or Syrian Rue seeds along with them." This one phrase embodies a number of popular myths in the psychedelic drug subculture. Let me try to unravel this tangled knot. [Pg.93]

FURTHER EXTENSIONS AND COMMENTARY There is a fascinating unanswered question that I had to ask myself a little while ago. It is a question that, if ever answered accurately, just might throw the entire area of the pharmacology of harmaline into a delightful disarray. I received a small quantity of documented seeds of Syrian rue and I was curious to see, in my hands, what its alkaloid content was. This is, after all, a well known source rapidly increasing in popularity as the inhibitor component of ayahuasca. So I ground a few of them up in a mortar under DMF and carbonate, spun down the extract, dissolved a drop of it in a milliliter of 90 10... [Pg.97]

Harmaline was first isolated in 1841, from Syrian rue. Its chemical structure was established in 1919, and it was first synthesized in 1927 by Richard Manske. [Pg.429]

Although Syrian rue was native only to Central Asia and Syria, it now grows wild along the Mediterranean coasts of Europe, Africa and the Middle East. It is esteemed from Asia Minor across to India and northeast Tibet. Its bitter, brown seeds contain /3-carboIines identical to those in psychedelic Banisteriopsis vines and in about the same proportions. [Pg.436]

The oral activity of tryptamines that are degraded by MAO can be enhanced by chemicals called monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI). This synergism serves as the basis for the Amazonian entheogenic brew, ayahuasca (which means vine of the souls ), where DMT is rendered orally active by the presence of MAOI harmala alkaloids from the plant Banisteriopsis caapi (Metzner 1999). Anoliher botanical source of the MAOI harmala alkaloids harmaline and harmine is the seed of the Syrian rue, Beganum harmala, a bush related to the creosote, native to Asia and Africa. There are anecdotal reports that the potency of psilocybin... [Pg.102]

Syrian Rue has a long history in Asia Minor, where its seeds are used to make the carpet dye known as Turkish Red. Apparently introduced many years ago into the U.S. by an aanonymous plant enthusiast who lived near Deming, New Mexico, Peganum harmala escaped from cultivation and by 1938 was found growing as far east as Pecos, Texas. Now it is officially reported from Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada and California. I have even heard of it surviving Montana winters, so obviously, once started in a favorable location, it becomes a hardy desert perennial. [Pg.173]

As if to test one s commitment, the Syrian Rue plant will demand any cultivator s careful attention this is no Boston Fern, but a strangely complicated "weed" that can thrive in the most barren of desert soils, yet is quite difficult to maintain even under controlled greenhouse conditions. The cultivation instructions for Peganum harmala published by a nursery specializing in exotic plants provides a good introduction to your own unique experience ... [Pg.175]

While Syrian Rue is generally recognized as the best non-rain forest source of harmala alkaloids, DMT sources seem not to be so firmly established. Plants containing DMT are not too hard to find, however. Desmanthus illinoensis (a weed legume common in the midwest), Arundo donax (a bamboo-... [Pg.176]
