Floats. Float level switches are suitable for clean Hquid appHcations, primarily for alarm function (Fig. 3). Mechanically cleaned racks allow smaller clear openings because head loss does not become so high. Mechanical cleaning can be intermittent or continuous. Intermittent cleaning is cycled by float-operated switches controlled by a float in the influent channel. 

Shell boilers may be fitted with internal level controls. Here controls are mounted on the crown of the boiler with the floats or probes extending to the water surface through the steam space. To check the operating function of these, it is necessary to drop the water level in the boiler, or, alternatively, a separate electronic testing device can be fitted. With fully flooded hot water boilers, a single level control or switch is fitted to protect against low-water condition. 

Make-up water. A semi-sealed section within the main tank will feed water from the treatment plant to the main tank either through a separate make-up tank or. In either case, the water level will be the same in both sections, excluding the ullage left for condense returns. Control of the make-up water level may be by float valve, float switches or conductivity probes. These methods allow water to flow through the treatment plant, although conductivity probes or switches permit a positive flow and avoid the risk of slippage. 

Since the low-pressure float needs a solenoid valve for tight closure, this valve can be used as an on-off control in conjunction with a pre-set orifice and controlled by a float switch (Figure 8.2). 

Should a float control fail, the level in the shell may rise and liquid pass into the compressor suction. To warn of this, a second float switch is usually fitted at a higher level, to operate an alarm and cut-out. 

A float-type FM regulator type is primarily employed on packaged FT boilers. It has a float chamber located at the NOWL and is connected to the steam-water areas of the boiler. When the water level falls, the float drops and mechanically moves a mercury switch (or electronic switch), which in turn actuates the FW regulator valve. 

More formal inspections also verily the operation of safety and other controls such as low water and fuel cutoffs, level controls, fusible plugs, pressure gauges, water glasses, gage cocks, stop valves, safety/relief valves, and BD valves and lines. Also, FW pumps, flue and damper arrangements, combustion safeguards, name plate specifications, set pressures, boiler connections, floats, mercury switches, bellows, and other components may be inspected. 

Clear-waste tank. An unlined steel clear-waste tank is typically used to hold clarified waste before injection. The tank is equipped with a float switch designed to start and stop the injection pump at predetermined levels. 

River circulates on the surface. The water from the Segre is warmer than that of the Ebro River at this moment of the year. In consequence, it is less dense and floats above. During September, the pattern of circulation switches the Ebro River water is now warmer than the Segre River water and flows on the surface, although the mixing of the two layers is a bit more intense. The situation remains like this until December, when the winter high flows make the water column uniform again.
