Floating control

Should a float control fail, the level in the shell may rise and liquid pass into the compressor suction. To warn of this, a second float switch is usually fitted at a higher level, to operate an alarm and cut-out. 

A two-position detector can be used to operate a floating control. At the upper limit it will operate the control in one direction and if it reaches the lower limit it will operate the control in the other... 

If a controller is used with an on-off detector, it functions only as an amplifier to transmit the detector signal to the controlled device. It can modify the speed of this action hy a hias or hy a slow-speed operating motor, as in the floating control.

The tank should preferably be provided with a float controlled filling device. 

Valves are used to control the water flow through the water lines of the cooling tower distribution system. Valves used for this type application include stop valves, flow control valves and float control valves. The types of valves, quantity required and complexity of design are dictated by the type and size of tower.

For self-regulating processes with little or no capacitance, a single-speed floating controller can be used, such as a single-speed reversible motor. The controller is usually provided with a neutral zone (dead zone), and when the measurement is within that zone, the output of the controller is zero. This dead zone is desirable, because otherwise the manipulated variable would be changing continually in one direction or the other.

As with other self-optimizers, this, too, is an integrating device. It therefore cannot be used on non self regulating processes. This class of processes has no equilibrium, no steady state, so the characteristic curve never comes to rest it is always floating. Unfortunately, floating control action cannot hold it. 

In order to force the water into the filter and to allow the floating control as described before, we will adopt a pump. There are many piunp types, and although this makes our selection more complex, it also gives us a more adequate piunp.
