Swimming pool treatment chemicals

High yields of NaOCl are obtained electrolyticaHy by oxidation of CT at dimensionally stable anodes (219). Sodium hypochlorite is prepared using small diaphragmless or membrane cells, with a capacity of 1—150 kg/d of equivalent CI2, which produce a dilute hypochlorite solution of 1—3 and 5—6 g/L from seawater and brine, respectively (see Chemicals from brine). They are employed in sewage and wastewater treatment and in commercial laundries, large swimming pools, and aboard ships. [Pg.472]

The Polyquats or polymerized quaternary salt. If we study the list of algicides approved by the DETR Committee on pages 107 and 108 in the book Swimming Pool Water published by the Pool water treatment Advisory group, we observe the Polyquats WSCP (or BUSAN 77), WSCP-2 (or BUSAN 79) and APCA (or BUSAN 1055) and their impact on Hazard and Incompatibility data . Indeed, these quats have a very low toxicity and are compatible with most swimming pool chemicals used. [Pg.133]

Trends in chemical treatment of swimming pool water across Europe are outlined. These relate entirely to the use of dry chlorine, comprising stabilised chlorine and calcium hypochlorite. Results from a recent UK survey are also summarised. [Pg.137]

Ozone is more popular than chlorine for municipal drinking water in some western European countries, where it has been used for more than 80 years. It is widely used in indoor swimming pools and spas, and also in industry, such as fish farming, fruit and vegetable wash water, waste treatment, and chemical processes. [Pg.207]

Calcium hypochlorite is a white solid that can be purchased in granular, powdered, or tablet form. The chemical is good for small water treatment plant disinfection applications. For disinfection of swimming pool water, the solid calcium hypochlorite is also frequently used. ... [Pg.379]

Chemical treatments, UV radiation, chlorine compounds from swimming pools, and oxidative pollutant compounds are all known to damage hair and reduce its strength [78-83],... [Pg.432]

Biocides are chemical substances that are destructive to many different organisms. They are used as pesticides in agriculture (Section 6.6) and as water treatment chemicals, particularly also for swimming pools. [Pg.1405]

London, continuous chlorination of the public water supply was inaugurated. Chemical disinfection of a public water supply was first practiced in the United States in 1908, and since that time has been a routine part of municipal water treatment. Chemical disinfectants are also used extensively in the production of bottled water and the manufacture of containerized beverages of all types, in the treatment of waste water, and in the treatment of water in swimming pools and spas. [Pg.295]

Hypochlorites of sodium, calcium, and lithium, and chlorinated trisodium phosphate involve chlorine in their production. Sodium hypochlorite of about 5% strength finds extensive use in the household bleach market and in residential swimming pools, and 15% sodium hypochlorite, an industrial bleach, is used for water treatment in municipal and industrial plants. Sodium hypochlorite is made by reacting chlorine with caustic soda. Calcium hypochlorite is mainly used as a swimming pool chemical. Aluminum chloride, produced from chlorine and aluminum or alumina, is used as a catalyst (for alkyl and ethyl benzenes, dyestuffs, ethyl chloride, and hydrocarbon resin production) and also in the production of pharmaceuticals and titanium dioxide. [Pg.11]

Checklists by their very nature tend toward being facility or process specific. They do, however, have the advantage that they can be prepared by experienced staff but implemented by those with less experience. They can be customized to specific industries, processes, or companies. A specific example of this would be the development of a checklist relating to the use of chemicals, particularly chlorine, in the treatment of water for swimming pools. [Pg.208]

For applications such as swimming pools and water-purification tanks, for which chemical resistance is required, or where resistance to dynamic stress is needed, special epoxy resins are used. Blends of a waterborne synthetic emulsion with a cement compound are suitable for applications with lower requirements. In some cases, e.g. sewage-treatment plants, elastomer-modified bitumen mortars are still used. [Pg.74]
