Arsenic is widely distributed about the earth and has a terrestrial abundance of approximately 5 g/t (4). Over 150 arsenic-bearing minerals are known (1). Table 2 fists the most common minerals. The most important commercial source of arsenic, however, is as a by-product from the treatment of copper, lead, cobalt, and gold ores. The quantity of arsenic usually associated with lead and copper ores may range from a trace to 2 —3%, whereas the gold ores found in Sweden contain 7—11% arsenic. Small quantities of elemental arsenic have been found in a number of localities. [Pg.327]

These were some of the practical considerations used by AstraZeneca R D Molndal, Sweden, in May 2001, to initiate a data-gathering project centered primarily on the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry (JMC) in collaboration with scientists at the Romanian Academy Institute of Chemistry in Timisoara, Romania. The major goal of this project was to capture every chemical structure and associated biological activities that were disclosed in JMC, and an initial goal of 20 000 entries was set for the first year. Then in 1995, Shoda and colleagues from Japan and Sweden found that gallstone carriers had significantly prolonged small-bowel transit times compared with controls. They too had a two-fold increase in the percentage DCA in bile that was associated with supersaturated bile, in contrast to the unsaturated bile found in the gallstone-free controls. [Pg.152]
