Sustainable development public education

Having a board comprised of individuals with diverse experience and who represent a broad range of stakeholders is important to corporate initiatives in sustainability. The corporations in the chemical sector of the 2004 DJSI valued the presence on their board of individuals with experience in, or commitment to, sustainability-related activities in other aspects of their lives. The companies have retained the services of individuals with demonstrated expertise in education, environmental affairs, and various philanthropic and social causes. The boards of Dow and DuPont are particularly noteworthy for the representation of directors who have received significant public recognition for their contributions to sustainable development. [Pg.476]

Sustainable economies. Economic decisions must be driven not only by short- but also by long-term perspectives in all areas of professional activity, especially engineering as applied to product development and in the innovation process. In an increasingly commercial, market-driven world, this is a challenge. Mechanical Engineers must occupy prominent, influential roles toward a more sustainability-driven economic future. Sustainable, not unlimited, growth is central to future solutions. Engineering educators, industrial leaders and public leaders must work in concert to address this issue. [Pg.140]

Enlightenment in the field of green chemistry is the essential part of sustainable education. This can be done through public lectures, the creation of new learning centres, seminars and workshops, mass media such as TV and radio programmes, and audio-visual means, as well as local and national round tables and conferences. The research, development and industrial implementation of new nature-friendly technologies is one of the most significant components of the whole system of sustainable education. [Pg.239]
