Survivorship

In predicting the effects of a pollutant on population growth rate, the effects of the chemical on the values of t, I, and n are of central interest. Chemical residue data and biomarker assays that provide measures of toxic effects are relevant here because they can, in concept, be used to relate the effects of a chemical upon the individual organism to a population parameter such as survivorship or fecundity (Figures 4.5 and 4.6). Examples of this are discussed in the second part of the text, including the reduction of survivorship of sparrow hawks caused by dieldrin (Chapter 5), the...

Chronic in vivo toxicity studies are generally the most complex and expensive studies conducted by a toxicologist. Answers to a number of questions are sought in such a study, notably if a material results in a significant increase in mortality or in the incidence of tumors in those animals exposed to it. But we are also interested in the time course of these adverse effects (or risks). The classic approach to assessing these age-specific hazard rates is by the use of life tables (also called survivorship tables).

With all size classes considered, 16.1% had slight, 33.3% moderate, 31.2% severe, and 19.4% very severe injury. White fir and incense cedar are well established in the understory, but their poorer survivorship to 12.00-23.99 in. (30.5-60.9 cm) in dbh compared with ponderosa pine suggests that other mortality factors have acted heavily on them in the past. Incense cedar and sugar pine are the most tolerant to oxidant, but sugar pine is present in very low numbers. The accelerated mortality of ponderosa pines has particular significance in this ecosystem, because it is the dominant member of the climax community. 

A feeding experiment was conducted using field concentrations of the aikaloidal fraction and the total triterpenoid glycoside fraction of thirty related species of columnar cacti (most in the Pachycereeae). Survivorship was measured as + or - and indicates successful development, pupation and emergence after eggs were laid by several d, melanogaster or d. mojavensis females. The latter species is a desert fly known to specialize on several species of Pachycereeae the former is a nonspecialized, nondesert species. Heliothis zea larvae were also used in a separate bioassay of toxicity where compounds were added to commercial diet. 

Specific differences in toxicity toward each test species were discovered between the various plant chemical arrays. Table HI lists survivorship for these species for alkaloid-producing cacti. Additionally, data was obtained for 20 species in which alkaloids were not detected. The three insect species showed consistent differences in tolerance toward given plant species, with no clear phylogenetic pattern accounting for this. Insects also responded differently to aikaloidal fractions versus triterpenoid glycoside fractions. Alkaloids were found to be generally not toxic to D.

Such a strong impact on survivorship or fecundity, and on the fitness of individuals, means exerting strong natural selection on herbivorous insects. This should favor the rapid evolution of insect adaptations which overcome it. This is, of course, a common occurrence in the application of pesticides or the development of resistant crop plant cultivars (11). The supposition that plant defenses select for detoxication adaptations in insects is the foundation of the concept of coevolution (12).

It should be noted that biomass and survivorship data (Figure IB) represent performance of assay insects fed leaves obtained two days previously so the first post-load survivorship is that obtained on May 25. 

Property Titling. Property (such as stocks, bonds, certificates of deposit, or real estate) held in joint tenancy with rights of survivorship automatically passes to the joint owner upon your death. This property is not subject to probate. If the property was acquired before 1977, the property s full value is included in your estate for tax purposes. For property acquired after that date, only your share of the property is included in your estate. Property held as tenancy in common does not follow these rules. In this case, you can leave your share to whomever you wish and it is subject to probate.
