Surveillance systems case studies

There are more examples for the application of these requirements If a study involves analytical procedures, the facility has to have an adequate power supply with adequate provisions for the case of power failures or breakdowns. The same provisions have to be taken for the air-conditioning system of the animal rooms. It is self-evident that the IT system of a test facility will have to be protected against this kind of event, too. Furthermore, an adequate ventilation system will be needed in order to protect test systems, equipment and technicians from noxious or corrosive gases and volatile solvents. In the area of in vitro test systems, a surveillance system for the facilities (i.e. the containers) used to store cell lines in a deep-frozen stage will have to assure that the level of liquid nitrogen does not fall below the critical minimal level. Many more examples could be cited and the appropriateness of the facility and its construction can be followed down to the small table on which the balance to be used in the study is placed Does this table have sturdy legs and a special. [Pg.171]

Skin Discoloration of the leg after immunization is a relatively unknown entity, which has been studied during a 10-year period after immunization of infants in the Dutch National Vaccination Program [4 ]. Discolored leg syndrome was defined as an even or patchy red, blue, or purple discoloration of the leg(s) and/or petechiae with or without swelling. In all, 1162 reports of adverse events after immunization were made to the passive surveillance system between 1994 and 2003. Red, blue, or purple discoloration and isolated petechiae were reported in 39%, 19%, 27%, and 14% of these cases respectively 1105 cases were considered to be related to immunization, based on a predefined risk window with the onset of symptoms after immunization—48 hours for discoloration and 2 weeks for petechiae. Of the 1105 cases, about 50% occurred after DTP-IPV - -Hibl immunization, and 30% occurred after DTP-IPV + Hib2 immunization. Discolored leg syndrome was often accompanied by fierce crying (78%). The median interval between immunization and the occurrence of the syndrome was 3.8 hours... [Pg.654]

The effectiveness of the modelling approach described in the previous Sections is demonstrated using a case-study in the mass transit domain, whose assets are vulnerable to several threats, including terrorist attacks. Therefore, surveillance systems for mass transit feature a growing number of heterogeneous sensing devices. In such a context, the quantitative evaluation of the PPS effectiveness is very important to design robust surveillance systems and to reduce the overall risk associated to the considered threats. [Pg.240]

For the numerator of a nosocomial pneumonia rate, accurate and consistent case finding of nosocomial pneumonia in the population under study is needed. Consistent definitions for case finding are essential. Therefore, it is imperative that there be available a uniform set of criteria that define nosocomial pneumonia. The most widely used definitions currently in use are the definitions used by National Nosocomial Infection Surveillance (NNIS) system hospitals, the complete version of which was published in Hospital Epidemiology and Infection Control in 1996. The current definition for nosocomial pneumonia is shown on Table 1. [Pg.40]
