Surface water discharge

Municipal sewage-treatment effluents discharge to surface waters and is subject to the same EPA control on quality and quantity as independent industrial surface-water discharges. Any tightening of EPA standards may therefore result in more stringent controls on industrial effluents discharged to sewers. All the water companies levy charges on industry for the reception, conveyance and treatment of the industrial effluents.

The two major design factors for surface water discharge are the transport of concentrate to the outfall site, and the design of the outfall structure. The design of the transport system and the outfall strucffire will depend upon the proximity of the plant to the site of disposal, and the body of water into which the concentrate will be discharged.

Surface water discharges of di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate from 298 industrial facilities in 1994 in the United States amounted to 264 kg, as reported in the Environmental Protection Agency Toxics Release Inventory (Environmental Protection Agency, 1999d).

Due to low mineral-to-fluid ratios and short residence times, minimal silicate weathering occurs in the streambed and the hyporheic environment. Rather, surface-water solutes represent discharges from other weathering environments that are spatially and temporally integrated by the watershed flux.

In the United States, many industrial facilities are required to pretreat waste-water before discharge to publically owned treatment works (POTW) or to surface waters. Discharge pH is regulated to be between 6.0 and 9.0 so...
