The interior surface finish, to comply with EEC and other health standards, must be rustproof, cleanable, and free from any crevices which can hold dirt. Bare timber in any form is not permitted. Most liners are now aluminium or galvanized steel sheet, finished white with a synthetic enamel or plastic coating. GRP liners are also in use. Floors are of hard concrete or tiles. Very heavy working floors may have metal grids let into the concrete surface. Floor concrete is coved up at the base of the walls to form a protective curb. [Pg.183]

Nearly all surface finishes and coatings, with the exception of ceramic types for high-temperature applications, are based on a polymer film of some sort. They account for the use of a lot of polymer, but determining just how much and which polymers is not easy because most formulations are proprietary, and production figures do not always separate polymer and nonpolymer components. Enamel Defects. Characterization of defects in porcelain enamel surfaces frequently requites detailed examination via microscopy to determine the sources of the defects. Defects ate divided into processing and material defects. The greatest number of defects result from processing bhsters, pinholes, black specks, dimples, tool marks, and chipping. Defects often occur from unobserved sources at almost every stage of the enameling process, but they ate not recognizable until the ware is fired. Washing machines currently on the market are constructed almost exclusively with drums and laundry tubs of corrosion-resistant stainless steel or with an enameled finish that is inert to alkaline wash liquors. Nevertheless, various machine components are made of less detergent resistant metals or alloys. To prevent corrosion of these parts, modern detergents contain corrosion inhibitors in the form of sodium silicate.
