Sulphur disinfectant

Sulphur dioxide is used as a preservative for beer, wine and meats in the production of sulphites and hydrosulphites in solvent extraction of lubricating oils as a general bleaching agent for oils and foods in sulphite pulp manufacture in the cellulose and paper industries and for disinfection and fumigation. [Pg.205]

Chlorine in the concentration of 0.2 to 0.4 ppm in aqueous solution and sulphur dioxide in very low concentrations, are disinfectants. [Pg.171]

Sulphide of liyclrogon is highly inflammable if burned in a limited quantity of air, the hydrogen is consumed, whilst most of the sulphur is deposited. By means of chlorine or nitric acid, it may he completely decomposed hence, chlorine acts as a disinfectant and purifier of sewers or rooms impregnated. with the odor of sulphide of hydrogen. The annexed represents the decomposition... [Pg.126]

The sulphites of the alkaline earths are prepared either by exposing the moistened, or better, the hydrated oxides, to gaseous sulphurous acid, when this ges is absorbed or tbe oxides or carbonates may be suspended in water, end a stream of sulphurous acid passed through or they may be produced by double decomposition from a soluble alkaline sulphite, and a chloride of the earthy metal. These sulphites are all more or less nearly insoluble in water and alcohol, but are rendered more soluble by an excess of sulphurous acid, in this respect resembling the carbonates. The only practical purpose to which any of these earthy sulphites have been applied, is as disinfectants. For this purpose, a mixture of the sulphites of lime and magnesia is used, Mr. M Dourall seems to have a method of producing sulphites much more readily than any other maker. [Pg.1018]

Peracetic acid is the most widely used organic peroxy acid. It is a strong oxidizer, which could he used in disinfection and bleaching agent. Peracetic acid can be synthesized from acetic acid and hydrogen peroxide. The formation of peracetic acid takes place in the equilibrium reaction (1). In order to accelerate the reaction rate, acid catalyst is needed (Swem, D., 1970). Conventionally homogeneous sulphuric acid catalyst is used. The reaction scheme is shown in Eq. (1)... [Pg.287]

When the gas is U) bo used as a disinfectant it is usually obtained by reaction (1) in sulphuric acid hictories (2) is used (3) indicates the methotl in which aimosplieric SO, is chiefly produced in the labora-toiy (4) is used (5) is the process directed by the LV 8. and Br. Phar-macopanas. [Pg.114]

Certain subetances are antiseptic, deodorant, and diainfeciant such are cblorioe, bromine, iodine, the hypochlorites, and sulphur dioxide others lack one of the powers, as the mineral acids and the non-volatile " diunfectaDts, which are antiseptic and disinfectant, but not deodorant Still others exert but one of the powers, as water and air, which may be mechanical deodorants, but neither disinfectants nor antiseptics. [Pg.207]

At one time the main uses of sulphur were in the manufacture of gunpowder and of sulphuric acid. Nowadays its use for these purposes is more restricted. Sulphur is used in the manufacture of carbon disulphide, ultramarine, vermilion and numerous other compounds. Vulcanisation of rubber may be effected with sulphur. Enormous quantities are converted to bisulphites for treating wood pulp in the manufacture of paper. Sulphur is employed as a preventive of the growth of fungus on vines, and mould on hops it is burnt in the oast house to improve the flavour of the hops it is used as a disinfectant, a familiar form being sulphur candles . [Pg.72]

Roberts and McDermott, 1911. Report an an original form of sulphur burner for disinfection. U. 8. Publio Health Rpt, March 31, 1911. [Pg.75]

One source of trouble and a cause of spoilage of much fruit is contamination from sour and moldy boxes. When a box is used several times it becomes permanently infected and a cause of infection by spoilage organisms. This can be controlled without much difficulty by having a tight room in which the worst boxes are placed after they are emptied, with steam turned on to saturate the atmosphere and sulphur burned or sulphurous acid gas liberated to act as a disinfectant. This does not require a large place, much time, or expense. ... [Pg.250]

Biological Iron reducing bacteria, sulphur reducing bacteria, mycobacteria, pseudomonas EDTA or BIZ type detergents at high pH shock disinfection with hydrogen peroxide, peracetic acid... [Pg.167]

Sulfur has been known from time immemorial. In the very first book of the Bible, Genesis 19 23-24, the Lord destroys the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah in a rain of sulfur and fire. No useful application is described in the Scriptures, but at least one is mentioned in The Odyssey. Homer let Odysseus exclaim, after killing of the suitors Bring sulphur Eurycleia that cleans all pollution and bring me fire, that I may purify the house with sulphur Sulfur and sulfur dioxide were obviously used early for disinfection. [Pg.1049]

Sulphur dioxide has been known since ancient times for its disinfecting and bleaching quality. Since the late 19th century and early 20th century, it has been used for industrial refrigeration plants. Also, it is widely used for producing quality paper by preparing Sulphite pulp. Quality pulp produced is taken as a raw material... [Pg.41]

Sulphur dioxide is also a powerful antiseptio, and haa been suocei ly employed for preventii the putrefoction nmd, as well as to stop formmitation. It is used in the sulphuring of wine, and serves as a valuable disinfecting agent. [Pg.317]
