Sulphatides (acidic glycolipids) have galactose residue with a sulphate group. 

The first synthesis of 2,3,4-trimethyl-D-galactose, which had previously been isolated from the hydrolysis products of methylated galac-tosans, was achieved by McCreath and F. Smith.20 1,6-Anhydro-D-galactopyranose, treated with dimethyl sulphate and alkali, underwent easy methylation and the resulting crystalline 2,3,4-trimethyl-l,6-anhydro-D-galactopyranose was conveniently hydrolyzed to the free sugar hydrate.

Another metabolite isolated from the specie, Pseudopterogorgia americana, is corallan, 39, the chemistry of which was investigated by Molchanova and coworkers [29], Corallan, 39, a sulphated glycoprotein contains D-glucose, D- and L-galactoses, D-arabinose, L-flicose and D-glucoronic acid. Some structural features of the polysaccharide moiety of 39 are shown in scheme 3. 

Sulphation of lactose with pyridine-SOa complex in pyridine resulted in formation of the galactose 6-sulphate. Other oligosaccharides were alsostudied. I he glycolipids, seminolipid and cerebroside sulphate, which are sulphated on the 3-position of galactose, were not oxidized by galactose oxidase. 

A sensitive fluorimetric assay for 2-amino-2-deoxy-D-hexoses with increased sensitivity over the Elson-Morgan and Dische-Borenfreund indole methods has been reported. The 2,5-anhydrohexoses produced by nitrous acid deamination of heparin, heparan sulphate, and 2-amino-2-deoxy-D-hexoses have been treated with 3,5-diaminobenzoic acid to give stable derivatives. Neither neutral sugars nor acetamido sugars interfere in the reaction. In a modification of an earlier procedure, equivalent colour complexes were formed by the interaction of 3-methyl 2-benzothiazoline and the 2,5-anhydrohexoses produced by deamination of 2-amino-2-deoxy-D-glucose and 2-amino-2-deoxy-D-galactose. ... 

O. 3 0.6 0.5, respectively, as well as 2,4-di-O-methyl-D-galactose. Each polysaccharide contained, in addition, 10% half-ester sulphate and ca. 0.5% protein.
