USS Cole (12 October 2000) Military (Marine) This attack was a suicide bombing attack against the U.S. Navy destroyer USS Cole on 12 October 2000, while it was anchored in the Yemeni port of Aden. Seventeen sailors were killed in the attack, which is often seen as a precursor to the September 11 terrorist attacks on U.S. soil. [Pg.109]

Emergent evacuation of occupants is an important component of social public safety, while terminal is one of the areas in airport operation where occupants are relatively concentrated and accident consequence influence is serious. Its safety problem has been attracting extensive concern. For example, on January 24, 2011, suicide bomb explosion swept the arrival hall of Moscow Domodedovo International Airport in Russia, causing about 40 deaths and more than 180 injuries. The rescue team evacuated all of the injured in two hours. On April 7, 2011, due to safety violations, the domestic terminal of Melbourne Airport of Australia Airlines was thrown into mess, and 6, 000 occupants were evacuated. [Pg.593]

One problem facing responders to a suicide bombing is that the bomber or accomplices may have hidden other devices at the scene or there may be a follow-up bomber. The only effective method to protect a location from vehicle bombs is to exclude vehicles from within at least 300 feet of the target area. [Pg.129]

As a tool of paramilitary or terrorist force, suicide bombing has much to offer. With it, very confined spaces and therefore high-density targets can be attacked. Often there is far better potential to conceal such a weapon and there is no complex trigger system required. Teams can be kept very small for laimching the attacks as there is no exfUtration or rescue required. The kUl ratio is enormous for one life sacrificed, 100 can easily be taken in the right environment. Done correctly, there is also no perpetrator to be questioned and compromise their units. [Pg.94]

The technology of suicide bombings can be quite varied. However, the common perception and indeed the majority of attacks conform to the model of an explosive package worn as a belt or waistcoat, commonly with fragmentation weapons incorporated in the design (often just bags of nails, screws or nuts on the victim-facing side of the weapon). [Pg.94]

The injury pattern is much less predictable than seen in conventional munitions using preformed fragments. Notched wire in grenades and flechettes from shells or mines have an identical shape and so a fairly uniform velocity, kinetic energy and therefore injury pattern. The converse is true of nearly all of the material included in suicide bombs even though there may be a common shape to the fragments, the device is rarely of a technical standard to ensure uniform distribution. [Pg.96]

Fragmentation of bodies and farmatian af secondary missiles from body parts significantly increase the risk of transmission of infectious disease. This risk is probably increased in suicide bombings. [Pg.128]
