Right Environment

Life forms are based on coded chemicals that, in the right environment, can reproduce themselves and make other chemicals needed to break down and utilize food. Within an organism, these biochemical reactions constitute nonnal metabolism. Biotechnology is the manipulation of these biochemical reactions at either the cellular or the molecular level. 

Enzymes are catalytic proteins that control the rates of biological reactions. The active site of metallo-enzymes is a metal ion, whereas the major function of the protein is the construction of a tridimensional mantle which causes selective conversion of substrates and creates the right environment for the metal. 

Elsa Reichmanis I have read a lot about start-ups and smaller companies having a faster pace and being the innovators of the future. I don t entirely buy into that. I think you can have that same rapid time to market if you have the right environment in a large company. For example, Lucent s MEMS Lambda Router took only 18 months from idea to delivery of product, and I don t think of Lucent as a small company. 

A Manager can then use these very broad targets in discussions with staff in their work groups. In this way their project and its objectives can be seen to fit in with the overall strategy of the company. Many people think that innovation cannot be planned. It is, of course, true that some individuals are more creative than others, and that there is no way of training employees to have the spark of genius. Until recently, wehave assumed that diffusion is a random process. However, in real experiments diffusion coefficients are often determined by the use of isotopic tracers. If the tracer (in this case an oxygen isotope) has jumped into a vacancy it is clearly in the right environment to jump immediately back to the unoccupied vacancy that it leaves behind. Such correlated jumps serve to reduce the diffusion coefficient to a value lower than that which would be expected for a random walk. The resulting diffusion coefficient in the presence of such correlated jumps is known as the tracer diffusion coefficient (as its value can be determined from tracer experiments) or the self-diffusion coefficient.
