As with the flexible foams there has been a shift to the use of polyethers. These are largely adducts based either on trifunctional hydroxy compounds, on tetrafunctional materials such as pentaerythritol or a hexafunctional material such as sorbitol. Ethylene diamine and, it is understood, domestic sugar are also employed. Where trifunctional materials are used these are of lower molecular weight (-500) than with the polyethers for flexible foams in order to reduce the distance between hydroxyl groups and hence increase the degree of cross-linking. [Pg.801]

The power of the new spectrometer to reveal configurations of difficult cyclitols or sugars was first tested with mt/o-inositol (2), using deuterium oxide as solvent. At 60 or 100 MHz. the one equatorial and five axial protons appear to have different chemical shifts as shown by Lemieux in 1956 with a 40 MHz. instrument (14,15). Several 1 -phosphates of deoxyfluoro sugars were prepared, and their acid-catalyzed hydrolysis was studied. 2-Deoxy-2-fluoro- (580), 3-deoxy-3-fluoro- (582), 4-deoxy-4-fluoro- (583), and 6-deoxy-6-fluoro-a-D-gluco-pyranosyl phosphates (584) were prepared by treatment of the corresponding per-( -acetylated )9-D-glucopyranoses with phosphoric acid [the p anomer (581) of 580 was prepared by a different method]. The first and second ionization constants (pA a, and pA a2) of these compounds were determined potentiometrically, as well as by the F-n.m.r. chemical shifts at a series of pH values, and then the rate constants of hydrolysis for neutral (B) and monoanion (C) were decided. The significance of n.m.r. spectroscopy for structural elucidation of carbohydrates can scarcely be underestimated, and the field has become vast with ramifications of specialized techniques. Although chemical shifts and spin couplings of individual nuclei constitute the primary data for most n.m.r.-spectral analyses, other n.m.r. parameters may provide important additional data. P. Dais and A. S. Perlin (Montreal) here discuss the measurement of proton spin-lattice relaxation rates. The authors present the basic theory concerning spin-lattice relaxation, explain how reliable data may be determined, and demonstrate how these rates can be correlated with stereospecific dependencies, especially regarding the estimation of interproton distances and the implications of these values in the interpretation of sugar conformations. [Pg.407]

The artificial sweeteners erythritol, sodium saccharin, and aspartame (Fig. 25) were also studied. Figure 26 shows potential oscillation in the presence of these artificial sweeteners [22]. The oscillation modes of these substances differed considerably. For erythritol above 10 mM, Fa.sds slightly shifted to more negative potentials. and Fb.sds were essentially unaffected by this sweetener. Erythritol thus induces change in the oscillation mode in much the same way as sugars. At 1 mM-1 M sodium saccharin, E and Fa.sds shifted to more negative values with increase in its concentration. Most proteins are not sufficiently stable in aqueous solution to allow formulation as a sterile solution. Instead, the protein is freeze-dried and reconstituted before use.
