Suction cup

It is often important to quantify the contamination of pore fluid in the unsaturated soil 2one, where monitoring wells are ineffective. In this region, suction cup lysimeters are useful (7). These samplers consist of a porous cup, typically ceramic, having two access tubes which are usually Teflon. One access tube provides a pressure-vacuum, the other discharges the sampled fluid to the surface. The porous cup, typically between 2 and 5 cm in diameter, is attached to a PVC sample accumulation chamber. [Pg.404]

Recently, we have developed a new version of this system, and this is shown in Figure 36. In this system, instead of the capillary being used as a blow-out pipette, the capillaries are used as wash-out pipettes. The capillaries are dispensed in a block, and the solution flows through the capillaries sequentially as they are presented to 2 press plates which apply pressure to the side of the block and maintain contact at all time. This done with 0-rings and has an effect similar to a suction cup sliding along the block. In Figure 36, it shows how 3 capillaries can be simultaneously emptied into three different channels of an autoanalyzer so that three determinations can be done simultaneously. [Pg.142]

Antitank Lunge Mine (p 208, Fig 155) is also described here under Hollow Charge Japanese Ammunition and in the book of Tantum Hoffschmidt, listed as Ref 7 (p 184) Suction-Cup Mine consisted of sheet metal cylinder filled with ca 4.5 lbs of 53/47—RDX/ TNT and provided on top with a 5 ft pole. [Pg.488]

Liquid water on one side of a silicone contact lens permeates through the lens by a solution-diffusion mechanism and evaporates on the other side quickly according to the permeability of water, whereas the solubility of water in silicone polymer is low [1]. The high water vapor permeability was speculated to be one of the reasons causing the suction cup effect that makes the lens stationary on one spot and tenaciously stick to the cornea this may damage the corneal epithelium and result in other complications. However, the high permeability per se cannot be the reason for the suction cup effect if the exterior surface is covered by the tear film, i.e., if there is no driving force for water permeation. [Pg.780]

These devices are generally helpful to elderly patients, especially those wearing aphakic lenses. They consist usually of a rubber bulb with a suction cup. They can cause severe corneal damage if used improperly as well as ocular infection if they are not properly cleaned and disinfected. [Pg.2211]

The other end of the animal, the pedal disk, attaches to hard substrates with a suction-cup-like action. Some secrete a sticky adhesive to help hold them in place. Although the animals are classified as sessile, or sedentary, they actually can move around very slowly, either by shuffling across intertidal... [Pg.48]

The suction cup of the clingfish serves more than one purpose. Not only does it enable the fish to hang on, but it also holds water when conditions are dry. After the tide goes out, the water level in a tide pool can fall dangerously low. If this happens, the fish uses the moisture held within the suction cup to breathe. Sheltered beneath a rock or within the crevice of a rock, it takes in oxygen from the trapped moisture and waits until the tide rolls back in with a fresh supply of water, oxygen, and nutrients. [Pg.95]

Today, over four hundred different varieties of pressure-sensitive tape are available. Manufacturers employ various glues, but most of these fall into the acrylic family of polymers. They are not designed to be removed as easily as masking tape, and they adhere strongly because they produce numerous microscopic suction cups when pressed on a surface. [Pg.45]

A service robot climbs surfaces on suction cups for deeming (see Figure 25), inspection, painting and assembly tasks. Tools can be mounted on the upper ttansversal axis. Navigation facilities allow accurate and controlled movement. [Pg.380]

Because these gripper models can cause harm to the component surface, vacuum grippers are used for handhng damageable parts. Two-dimensional parts such as sheet meteil parts are also handled by vacuum grippers. Using the principle of the Venturi nozzle, an air jet builds up a vacuum in the suction cup that holds the parts. When the air jet is turned off, the parts are automatically released. [Pg.414]

The Compact Disk is a very sensitive molding. It is released from the mold surface by compressed air and is then removed by a handling device equipped with soft suction cups. Although the CD is only 1.14 mm (0.045 in) thick, on some machines the mold must open fairly wide for allowing the handling unit to remove the CD. [Pg.85]
