Substance abuse methadone

A dramatically different pattern is found in surveys of drug abuse treatment facilities. Substance abuse treatment centers have reported that more than 20% of patients use benzodiazepines weekly or more frequently, with 30%— 90% of opioid abusers reporting illicit use (Iguchi et al. 1993 Stitzer et al 1981). Methadone clinics reported that high proportions ofurine samples are positive for benzodiazepines (Darke et al. 2003 Dinwiddle et al. 1996 Ross and Darke 2000 Seivewright 2001 Strain et al. 1991 Williams et al. 1996). The reasons for the high rates of benzodiazepine use in opioid addicts include self-medication of insomnia, anxiety, and withdrawal symptoms, as well as attempts to boost the euphoric effects of opioids.

Outcome studies of methadone maintenance treatment have reported favorable results. High rates of patient retention, reduced criminality, and improved social rehabilitation are reported. Despite its proved effectiveness, it remains a controversial approach among substance abuse treatment providers, public officials, policy makers, the medical profession, and the public at large. Nevertheless, almost every nation with a significant narcotic addiction problem has established a methadone maintenance treatment program.

Substance abuse has been the subject of several lOM studies, which have covered a whole host of issues related to the topic, including federal regulation of methadone treatment, the development of medications for the treatment of opiate and cocaine additions, and community-based research to find better ways to treat people who abuse drugs.

States, and treatment may reduce potential transmission. However, data are limited when evaluating the role of HCV therapy in patients with active illicit drug use who are not in a drug treatment program. Use of substance abuse programs such as methadone treatment centers should be encouraged to help reduce risky behaviors. 

Opioid Treatment Program Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) certified program, usually comprising a facility, staff, administration, patients, and services that engages in supervised assessment and treatment, using methadone, buprenorphine, L-a-acetylmethadol (LAAM), or naltrexone, of individuals who are addicted to opioids.
