Transient Studies in an Adiabatic Packed-Bed Reactor was the title of a publication by Berty et al (1972). This was in connection with thermal runaway of reactors. The pertinent subject will be discussed in a following chapter in which the interest is focused on how to avoid the onset of a runaway. Here the object of the experiment was to see what happens after a runaway has started. [Pg.157]

Similarly, Schmid-Elsaesser et al. (7) reported a synergistic effect of hypothermia when added to therapy with either tirilizad or magnesium (Mg). In this study, rats were subjected to transient ischemia of 90 min duration using a suture occlusion model. Hypothermia was administered intraischemically and animals were rewarmed simultaneous with reperfusion. Subjects were treated with various combinations of the three agents, in a systematic fashion. A stepwise increase in the reduction in infarct volume was observed between Tirilizad + Mg, hypothermia alone, and hypothermia + tirilizad + Mg in combination. [Pg.97]

In the second study [16], 62 subjects were treated with intravenous ceftazidime and amikacin. The treatment group also received aerosolized amikacin 100 mg twice daily. Treatments were given for an average of 15 days, and subjects were reevaluated four to six weeks after hospital discharge. During treatment, transient improvements in several outcome measures were noted (e.g., x-ray score, inflammation indices, and percentage underweight) however, there were no differences in any measure at the final evaluation point. As in the earlier study, eradication of bacteria from sputum was also transient. [Pg.492]

Controlled human exposure studies are essential to establish the health consequences of PM exposures. These studies are typically designed to study inhalation of size-defined PM under highly controlled conditions that will allow the characterization of exposure-response relationships. Since humans are exposed to the pollutant of interest, specifically size-fractionated PM, causahty can be established easily and the confounding effects of other pollutants can be minimized (Devlin et al. 2005). Another advantage of such clinical studies is the abihty to select subjects with a known clinical status (i.e., healthy vs. a specific disease, typically cardiovascular or pulmonary disease) and observe the pathophysiological responses of interest. However, controlled human exposures have some limitations (Utell and Frampton 2000). For both practical and ethical reasons, clinical studies are restricted to exposure concentrations and durations that will only ehcit transient responses in human subjects. These studies involve a small number of sample subjects, which excludes susceptible populations at higher risk. Chronic exposure or high PM concentration related health effects are not attainable by the clinical studies. These experiments are also very costly to perform. [Pg.431]

A 15-year, prospective cohort study of 2991 elderly patients evaluated the risk of developing Parkinson s disease and previous neuroleptic exposure [37. After adjustment for gender and past occupation, previous exposure to neuroleptics was associated with incident Parkinson s disease (relative risk, 3.16 95% confidence interval [Cl], 1.65-6.04), with a relative risk for benzamides (sulpiride, metoclopramide) of 3.65 (95% Cl, 1.41-9.45) and for phenothiazines (flunarizine, aceprometazine, levomepromazine, cyamemazine, thioridazine, athioproperazine) of 2.59 (95% Cl, 1.23-5.43). Of note, approximately a third of subjects had presented with transient Parkinsonism during drug exposure. [Pg.61]

In recent years the possibility that lactate, formed within the brain and released by astrocytes, is an important neuronal substrate both for energy and incorporation into neurotransmitters has been the subject of many studies and considerable controversy. There is evidence that suggests transient release of lactate in human brain on stimulation [48,8,88], Little is known about the highly active metabolism that takes place in the many elaborate, lamellar distal processes of astrocytes dispersed through the neuropil and interacting with an estimated >100,000 synapses [82, and references therein]. In biological systems, electron transfer kinetics are determined by many factors of different physical origin. This is especially true in the case of a bimolecular reaction, since the rate expression then involves the formation constant Kf of the transient bimolecular complex as well as the rate of the intracomplex transfer [4]. The elucidation of the factors that influence the value of Kf in redox reactions between two proteins, or between a protein and organic or inorganic complexes, has been the subject of many experimental studies, and some of them are presented in this volume. The complexation step is essential in ensuring specific recognition between physiological partners. However, it is not considered in the present chapter, which deals with the intramolecular or intracomplex steps which are the direct concern of electron transfer theories. [Pg.5]
