Another potentially explosive class of compounds is multiply bonded hydrocarbons. Early in the twentieth century chemical engineers learned by disastrous accidents that pure acetylene itself can detonate because the reaction... [Pg.432]

In the past decade Raman spectroscopy has assumed an important role in musculoskeletal tissue studies, especially in bone tissue studies. Applications to a wide range of problems in basic biology, biomechanics, and medicine have appeared in the journal literature. Most workers have used cell cultures or excised bone tissue, including human biopsy and cadaveric tissue. We expect that Raman spectroscopy will become increasingly important in such studies, as more life scientists and engineers learn how to employ it. Just as importantly, recent reports of non-invasive spectroscopy suggest that Raman spectroscopy may have a role in human subjects studies of bone development, function, and disease. [Pg.361]

There is no simple, universal rule for deciding when to use the head form of Bernoulli s equation and when to use the energy form, Eq. 5.7 if correctly applied, both give the same result. Through practice engineers learn which is more convenient for a given problem. [Pg.144]

The entire process is time consuming and may require at least a day or more of work. In the case of difficult inventive problems, the process may take up to a week. However, it is not a waste of time the inventive engineer learns about the designing problem and in the process structures the acquired knowledge. In this case, more means more the more is learned about the designing problem, the better chance there is of producing novel results. The ISQ process has three main stages ... [Pg.123]

All of these things the engineer learns to shrug off and go about his joh, as his predecessors have done for 5,000 years. If he does his job well he has the deep satisfaction of knowing that he has created something that will last and will make a solid contribution to the common good. [Pg.15]
